Description
The Principal R&D Engineer is responsible for designing and executing experimental pilot plant studies to develop new or improved products and test new catalysts. The engineer may also provide technical support for scale up, commercial design, commercial plant start-up & operation (catalyst, product, process). The engineer reports to the R&D Director in Lummus' R&D organization in Pasadena, Texas.
Key Responsibilities
Main responsibility of this position is to manage the polypropylene pilot plant program, with the pilot plant located at Lummus' R&D facility in Pasadena, Texas. Depending on time demands, working on other projects is a possibility.
Co-responsible for the Design of Experiments (together with the Novolen PP Technology Manager and Polymers R&D team in Mannheim, Germany).
Responsible for coordinating and executing pilot plant runs by working with Maintenance, Operations and Analytical groups within the Lummus R&D organization. Need to communicate objectives of each run, assist with planning logistics (ie. which catalyst is required, feedstock, operating instructions, product sample requirements) and provide daily supervision of this 24/7 operation.
Execute the program consistent with HSE requirements, including following the "Management of Change" process, generating written operating instructions for the pilot plant, participation in Process Hazard Analysis meetings, and other PSM-related activities.
Responsible for data analysis and reporting on daily or weekly or monthly basis (as needed) and issuing test reports.
Guide the Maintenance/Operations groups through pilot plant modification projects (ie. sizing equipment, preparing equipment lists & specifications, assisting with equipment costing, updating P&IDs, etc.). The objective of these projects is to improve pilot plant operation & reliability by procedural and/or technical means.
Communicate effectively with Novolen PP Technology Manager and R&D organization in Mannheim, as well as with Pasadena R&D's Maintenance, Operations, and Analytical organization to ensure all required resources are available to execute the planned development program.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
PhD in Chemical Engineering or a related field.
10 years experience with polypropylene production or catalysis is preferred; experience with research and pilot plant operations also preferred
Strong background in fundamental chemical engineering principles (polymerization processes, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, unit operations, reaction kinetics, fluid mechanics, process modeling, etc.)
Excellent technical, written and verbal communication skills in English; able to communicate effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders and team members
Proven ability to prioritize and manage projects and operations and deliver on their objectives
