Position Purpose summary:
The Unit Manager is primarily focused on the strategic aspects of care delivery including comprehensive planning, interdisciplinary coordination, resource management and ongoing evaluations. The Unit Manager provides support, advocacy, and choice to Residents and their families to ensure the highest quality of person-centered care achievable within the mission, vision, and values of the Salvation Army. The Unit Manager is also responsible to support the Director of Care in providing continuing care and assist in maintaining a safe and secure environment for residents, visitors and other staff members.

Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $40.22 to $50.27 with a maximum of $60.33.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.

The Unit Manager is also responsible to support the Director of Care in providing continuing care and assist in maintaining a safe and secure environment for residents, visitors and other staff members.
Accountabilities:
Nursing Administration:
- Ensures that facility has established and implemented appropriate infection control procedures with ongoing monitoring.
- Ensures that the master nursing rotations comply with union contract.
- Ensures that safety and administration of medications is monitored. Follow up is done on all medication errors to prevent recurrence.
- Develops the nursing team through role modeling, ongoing coaching, mentoring and the provision of continuing education.
- Schedule and chair monthly nursing staff meetings and weekly case management meetings.
- Perform staff appraisals and 1:1 meetings for Health Care Aides and Shift Lead LPNs
- Ensures that concerns with property and equipment are reported and that nursing station is organized, clean, and tidy.
Program Operations
- Ensures that occurrence reports are completed and processed as per policy
- Ensures the timely reporting of monthly / quarterly statistics
- Ensures that adequate program supplies are maintained
- Acts as the person of contact by frontline staff to address their needs, concerns and feedback
- Promotes a healthy workplace environment
- Participates in the development of plans, objectives and strategies for care services which are aligned with overall organizational strategic directions.
- Ensures that departmental audits are done, and action plan completed for review by the Director of Care
- Reviews nursing budget and reports variances to Finance Manager in a timely manner
External Interdisciplinary Liaison:
- Attends all meetings with AHS and interdisciplinary team
- Works collaboratively with AHS case managers, physicians and pharmacy
- In the absence of the Clinical Educator, coordinates and leads family conferences and related meetings
- Oversees all incidents and concerns which may involve AHS
Team Management
- Oversees and manages scheduling and appropriating staff hours within the care department. Deals with scheduling challenges (with support from Office Clerk)
- Responsible for entering staff hours for payroll and dealing with staff issues related to pay, shifts, IT, etc.
- Maintains collective agreement compliance and effective ongoing working relationships with unions.
- Monitors employee sick time and workers compensation utilizations to ensure effective use of resources.
- Conducts regular performance appraisals for frontline staff and addresses performance management in accordance with organizational policies.
- Liaises with the Educator to ensure all staff has current education.
- Ensures staffing complement maximizes resources to achieve appropriate resident care.
- Responsible for the recruitment, performance management and discipline of staff in consultation with the Director of Care and Human Relations. This includes supervision of all nursing staff and is responsible for timely and effective recruitment, hiring, orientation, training, development, discipline, dismissal and performance management of all staff.
- Gives input into human relations decisions which include hiring, terminations, and disciplinary decisions.
- Ensure nursing staff completes mandatory training; health care provider specific training e.g. Standard First Aid/CPR, infectious control, medication administration and e-learnings are completed within the set time frame and constantly review the skills and competencies of staff to adequately meet the requirement of the job.
- Oversees, supports and mentors staff who provide direct resident care, ensuring they are providing a high standard of care.
- Conflict management including communications and interpersonal issues to support a healthy workplace

MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY:
- This position reports directly to the Director of Care.
- This position has about 80 direct reports comprising Health Care Aides, Licensed Practical Nurses, Shift Lead LPNs and Office Clerk. Maintain and manage direct report performance appraisals and disciplinary progress.
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Salvation Army Edmonton Centre of Hope is a smoke free and scent free workplace.
- As a 24/7 department, this position will be required to participate in an on-call rotation as scheduled by the Director of Care
- Position is required to connect at least once per month with ALL shifts and hold 2 staff meetings in order to serve the night shift (where applicable)
- Work schedule may change as set by Supervisor.
- The incumbent's work environment is typically at work sites within residential settings, and may experience the following disagreeable conditions: therefore, will need to follow or use universal precautions:
- Dealing with people with challenging behaviours, verbal abuse
- Exposure to bodily fluids, bodily waste, and infectious diseases
- Exposure to drugs, alcohol, and solvents
- Physical attacks by others
- Exposure to toxic chemicals
- Sharp objects (i.e., needle sticks, knives, and weapons)
- Other dangerous situations
- Immunization for Hepatitis B and vaccination against Tuberculosis
- Responding to first aid emergencies; including overdose and death

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Bachelors of Nursing or equivalent.
- Consideration will be given to other healthcare-related professions.
- A combination of education and experience may also be considered.
- Current certification in Basic Life Support, Criminal Police Investigation Check with Vulnerable Sector Check, Non-violent Crisis Intervention training.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- A minimum of 5 years of prior related experience including experience in a Supportive Living (Type B) site and employee management
- Knowledge of the Continuing Care Health Services Standards (for supportive living) an asset
- Prior experience working with seniors.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Good organizational and time management skills with the ability to multi-task
- Must possess excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with residents and staff members.
- Possess critical thinking, problem solving and decision making
- Computer literacy in a Windows environment including email, word, power point, and excel.
