Job Duties
Richard Bland College (RBC) is a two-year, residential, liberal arts transfer institution that focuses on preparing students for transfer to highly ranked colleges and universities. The College is a hidden gem located outside the Tri-Cities region-and its rural setting featuring 750+ acres of wetlands, bucolic forest, and the state's oldest and largest pecan grove.
The Chief of Staff (CoS) position at Richard Bland College will assist the president to streamline operations and ensure alignment of institutional initiatives across functional units to achieve priority goals during a pivotal period of transition. The Chief of Staff will have primary responsibility for strategic and six-year planning, including management of
AchieveIt (or similar software) to track progress toward strategic goals; the position will proactively redirect initiatives as needed to achieve priority goals.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
The Chief of Staff is a key member of the President's Cabinet and provides leadership and operational oversight to the Office of the President in advancing operational excellence and fulfilling the College's mission and goals. The Chief of Staff reports directly to the President and serves as a senior advisor on a wide variety of administrative and executive duties, special projects, and initiatives involving the President's office and its priorities including:
1. Driving Strategic Initiatives ensuring that each aligns with the College's overarching goals, including facilitating discussions among senior leaders to set priorities, tracking the progress of initiatives and driving results to ensure milestones
are met.
2. Managing Special Projects spearheading high-visibility projects, including the institutional strategic plan, which require attention to detail and an ability to work across various departments.
3. Supporting Senior Leadership Teams serving as a conduit between senior Cabinet leaders, ensuring alignment in priorities and translation of strategic goals into achievable plans. Ensure alignment with institutional strategic vision and objectives across units during a pivotal transitional time for the College. Represent the President in meetings and events as needed.
4. Enhancing Communication and Coordination Collaborate with individuals across the College to build an atmosphere of coordination and clear understanding of the College's mission, vision, and goals. Facilitate seamless communication between internal and external stakeholders and ensure clear and consistent messaging to the Board. Evaluate immediate courses of action for crisis situations and coordinate responses for the President's consideration. Other duties as assigned.
5. Commitment to integrity, sound judgment, and high level of discretion, with a deep understanding of the sensitive nature of the President's work.
Minimum Qualifications
Proven success in administration and strategic planning, organizational development, change management, and effective teambuilding.
Demonstrated success managing teams and promoting cross-departmental collaboration and complex initiatives that support institutional goals.
Proven success in negotiation and consensus-building across internal and external stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to apply critical and strategic thinking to develop solutions-oriented approaches for addressing institutional opportunities.
Proven success managing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, ensuring timely completion and high-quality outcomes.
Documented experience interacting with internal and external stakeholders through strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication.
Evidence of a deep understanding of higher education structures, regulations, governance, and practices.
Experience working with the Board of governance and management.
Additional Considerations
Previous experience in a senior administrative role at a university or higher education institution.
