As Tesla continues to vertically integrate our operations, Tesla's in-house cell group is looking for a highly motivated Cell and Process Modeling Engineer to work on a critical challenge facing the world's energy transition. In this role, you will lead the development and optimization of electrochemical process models and control systems for Tesla's advanced 4680 battery production. This role combines cutting-edge battery technology with data science, focusing on developing and maintaining physics-based models for lithium-ion cells to support factory ramp-up and deliver cutting-edge battery technology. You will partner with cross-functional teams to transition new processes from initial design and prototyping to full-scale production, ensuring electrochemical performance and process reliability.

Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the design, materials, and manufacturing teams to develop dynamic simulations of cell performance and associated manufacturing processes
  • Work closely with process engineers to build and refine simulations to predict cell behavior and process outcomes, leveraging manufacturing data
  • Simulate process upset scenarios to understand the limitations of the process
  • Develop code that is organized, structured, documented, maintainable and reusable
  • Use Python scripting and SQL to interface equipment with Tesla Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and to collect data into production databases
  • Introduce automated processes into production, and train and equip Sustaining Team to support automated equipment after deployment into production
  • Establish test plans and control test plan execution
  • Debug and optimize automated processes to maximize cycle time and uptime.
  • Managing the network and hardware IT infrastructure


Requirements
  • Evidence of exceptional ability, including a strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and demonstrated ability to leverage this understanding to solve challenging technical problems
  • 5+ years as a cell modeling engineer OR electrochemical systems modeling engineer
  • Degree in Chemical, Material or Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or equivalent experience
  • In depth knowledge of electrochemical principles and their application to lithium-ion cell manufacturing and degradation mechanisms
  • Strong Programming skills and experience in Python, MATLAB, COMSOL or equivalent applied to electrochemical processes or battery systems, with experience in scripting and workflow automation
  • Analytical mindset with a proven ability to interpret electrochemical data and optimize processes based on modeling insights
  • Familiarity with data integration and database systems (e.g., SQL) for managing electrochemical process data
  • Preferred: Battery abuse modeling experience, Prior work modeling unit operations in cell manufacturing (e.g., electrode processing, cell formation). Understanding of databases and various program languages (Java, Python). HMI programming experience - TwinCAT HMI, WinCC and Ignition, Robotic programming skills, Vision systems

      $80,000 - $174,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

      Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
