This is an executive position (no union affiliation) and serves at the pleasure of the Anchorage Equal Rights Commission.
DEPARTMENT: Equal Rights Commission
HOURS OF WORK: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
LOCATION: City Hall - 632 W 6th Ave

Example of Duties

Under the General direction of the Anchorage Equal Rights Commission, implements Municipal ordinances on discrimination and program policies adopted by the commission. Manages and directs activities of subordinate investigators and support staff of the agency to ensure investigations of complaints of discrimination and other work priorities or ordinance requirements are attained in a timely and cost effective manner.

This is an Executive classification listed in Anchorage Municipal Code (AMC) 3.30.172 and in accordance with AMC 3.70.060.C.1 is exempt from collective bargaining.

In accordance with AMC 3.30.172.B.5, this executive exempt position is subject to an appointment by the Anchorage Equal Rights Commission and subject to the approval of the mayor.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Law, Political Science, or similar discipline and six (6) years of experience in teaching, counseling, public relations, law, social work, or human relations with an emphasis on developing and understanding problems related to equal rights and finding solutions to those problems.

OR

Master's degree or doctorate degree (including J.D.) in Human Resources, Law, Political Science, or similar discipline, and four (4) years of experience in teaching, counseling, public relations, law, social work, or human relations with an emphasis on developing and understanding problems related to equal rights and finding solutions to those problems

Must possess and/or obtain:
  • Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.
  • The ability to use a personal computer, fax, calculator, printer, copier, and scanner.

Military Service Interview Preference
Veterans who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows the full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual's command organization, and shows the name, signature, title, and contact information of the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
