PRINCIPAL

Definition:

The Principal serves as the instructional leader and chief executive officer of the school and possesses the vision, knowledge, and commitment to implement educational best practices. The Principal promotes the District goals and initiatives while embracing the uniqueness of the school and its community. The school administrator is an instructional leader who promotes the success of all students.

Examples Of Duties
Leads the hiring process and makes recommendations to the Assistant Superintendent of Personnel; supervises and evaluates the performance of the school personnel.
Directs and coordinates District, federal, and state initiatives and mandates.
Is responsible for safety, discipline, and general order of the school.
Fosters and maintains positive relationships with all staff, students, parents, and community members.
Provides leadership in curriculum, evaluation, and professional development.
Promotes and develops the leadership capacity of others through meaningful opportunities, collaboration, and involvement.
Successfully mediates concerns between and among teachers, staff, parents and students.
Works collaboratively with multiple administrative, District, and site teams to share best practices to promote the success of all students.
Analyzes data to make informed site-based curricular and program decisions.
Embraces and implements the effective use of technology to enhance instruction, and improve communication and administrative and management functions.
Plans and directs the business operations of the school; develops and administers site budgets; assures proper allocation of funds for instructional and non-instructional equipment and materials.
Facilitates co-curricular activities and student organizations.

Knowledge of:
Current curriculum applicable to the grade levels
Appropriate supervision procedures
School law and Board policies and regulations
Organization and supervision of school personnel
Master schedule development
Physical plant management

Ability to:
Supervise and evaluate staff members
Carry out board policies and state and federal law
Communicate effectively both in writing and orally
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
Plan and supervise work of self and others
Prepare accurate and detailed reports

Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of this class, the incumbent is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret complex data, information and documents; analyze and solve complex problems; use math/mathematical reasoning; perform highly detailed work under changing, intensive deadlines, on multiple concurrent tasks; work with constant interruptions; and interact with managers, employees, students, other government agency officials, professional and community groups, environmental groups, the media, the public and others encountered in the course of work.

Qualifications
Must possess a valid California teaching and administrative credential
Master's degree preferred
Must have demonstrated leadership ability
Must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Must have a valid California driver's license
