A Snapshot of Your Day

The Electrical Designer - Instrument Transformers will be part of theEngineering and R&D team, responsible for designing inductive currenttransformers, voltage transformers, and combined transformers for voltageclasses ranging from 72.5 kV to 765 kV. The role also includes the design ofstation service voltage transformers from 72.5 kV to 245 kV for metering,protection, and control applications in high-voltage systems. Based at our Pickering office, the candidate will work on standardizingexisting designs and developing innovative engineering solutions to ensurebest-in-class product performance, reliability, efficiency, and customerexperience. Key responsibilities include developing and optimizing existingdesigns, engineering tools, and methods to support decarbonization and thegrowing energy supply demands. This role involves close collaboration with customers, internalstakeholders (Factory Sales, Order Management, Procurement, QualityManagement), and suppliers to develop and implement technical solutions thatensure the highest levels of customer satisfaction.

Your Tasks:
  • Ensure that all products meet customer specifications, applicable regulations, and performance standards.
  • Prepare technical data sheets and product costings for customer quotations.
  • Prepare bills of material (BOM), drawings, routine and type test programs, and test and manufacturing instructions for production orders in accordance with applicable standards and customer requirements.
  • Perform electrical design of transformers, including calculations for current transformers, winding design for voltage transformers, and accuracy assessments of CTs as per customer specifications and quotation and order stages rulebook.
  • Standardize designs, improve internal calculation procedures and tools, specify materials, and modify product designs to achieve 100% First Pass Yield.
  • Contribute to root cause analysis of electrical failures during factory acceptance testing and in-service performance; initiate corrective actions as required.
  • Support the supplier process and product qualification efforts by providing material specifications, reviewing and approving supplier drawings, issuing inspection/test instructions, and evaluating performance test results and supplier deviation requests.
  • Collaborate and share knowledge across the Trench Group's global network on topics such as calculation procedures, processes, lessons learned, and best practices.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise assigned technical activities and report progress to the line manager.


Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a comparable discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in electrical design for medium- or high-voltage products such as power/distribution transformers, instrument transformers, switchgear, or high-voltage systems used in measurement and protection applications. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience will be considered.
  • Experience in the commissioning, operation, or maintenance of the above-mentioned equipment is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of international and local standards (ANSI, IEEE, IEC, CSA) relevant to the design and installation of electrical components in North America. Familiarity with international standards for instrument transformers is a plus.
  • High attention to detail, ability to prioritize effectively, and commitment to quality and project timelines.
  • Proven planning, organizational, and time management skills, with strong intercultural awareness.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) status is an asset.
  • You are open-minded, eager to learn, results- and solution-oriented.
  • Possess strong analytical, communication, and presentation skills. Basic commercial knowledge is also desirable.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for technical conferences, standardization committee meetings, and supplier/customer visits (both nationally and internationally).
