The R&D Machine Safety Specialist will have accountability for leading Global Foods' short and long-term strategy for machine safety across Global Foods Pilot Plants (TPC, Plano Process Lab, BCIC and Beaumont Park). As a subject matter expert, they will collaborate with internal engineering teams and external vendors to recommend, remediate, and validate innovation equipment that meets both PepsiCo, OSHA, CE and ISO design safety standards.
In addition, the associate will develop and execute a strategy to remediate all legacy equipment within both locations. They will develop a 5-year Capital plan for high-risk equipment, manage vendor partners to execute and explore the lowest cost safety solution to deliver against the requirements. In addition, this associate will support Global Foods as our resident SME, engaging with Corporate Safety, PepsiCo R&D Safety and Supply Chain Safety Leads to maintain partnership and influence the broader PepsiCo landscape in regard to Machine Safety.

Responsibilities
- Lead PepsiCo Global Foods R&D Machine Safety Strategy. Develop short and long-term approaches for machine safety across innovation development and our Global Foods Pilot Plants. Key accountability for TPC (Dallas, Texas) and Plano with consultant accountability for BCIC (Monterrey Mexico) and Beaumount Park (Leicester, UK).
- As the leading SME in Machine Safety, support all new process innovation from design through commissioning to ensure they meet PepsiCo and OSHA safety standards.
- Develop a strategy to ensure all legacy machines and equipment are MESS (Machinery & Equipment Safety Standards) compliant over the next 5-7 years. Align senior leadership team to approach, costs, trade-offs, and lead through execution.
- Lead the Management of Change process for all new, moved or to be modified process equipment within the Plano R&D and TPC locations.
- Partner/collaborate with EHS & project teams to deliver safety risk assessments, remediations and validations as needed to meet project timelines and necessary legacy equipment modifications.
- Lead safety equipment risk assessments, remediation selection and execution and drive validation of implemented safety solutions for all new/modified innovation equipment either through identified vendor or as the Subject Matter Expert depending on scope and complexity.
Lead the following PepsiCo Technical Standards for R&D Plano & TPC:
- PepsiCo EHS Standard - Management of Change.
- PepsiCo EHS Standard - Machine & Equipment Safety.
- PepsiCo EHS Standard - Hazardous Energy (LO/TO).
- PepsiCo EHS Standard - Electrical Safety.
- Lead the Global R&D MESS Working group across all R&D categories to set strategic objectives and support technical growth in MESS as well as represent R&D cross-functionally.
- Build technical knowledge and expertise in Process Safety fitting our core & transform capabilities needs growing as a subject matter expert for Global R&D.
- Lead 5-year strategy Capital Plan and manage the annual operating budget for Machine Safety.
- Serve as the R&D point of contact for contractors hired to complete Machine Safety activities such as risk assessments, remediation, and validation. Participate in all risk and design reviews. Ensure PepsiCo selections fit required standards and cost-engineer solutions when/if appropriate.
- Leverage technical background to recommend risk reduction measures and corrective actions; manage through implemented solution and validation.
- Serve as consultant/liaison for vendors and equipment manufacturers ensuring consistency and adherence to PepsiCo safety standards for all R&D led programs.
- Provide technical consultation as R&D SME on Machine Safety to Global R&D. Educate and mentor others in our R&D Foods locations to deliver project success.
- Develop strategy to manage our legacy equipment challenges, including innovative and cost-competitive solutions to complex opportunities which meet PepsiCo standards.
- Develop training materials and conduct technical seminars to elevate knowledge across R&D
- Expected to collaborate in development of training and strategy to improve the safety culture and knowledge of our sites.
- Represent R&D in appropriate related cross-functional and industry forums.
- Continue education as necessary to maintain expertise in machinery safety design, build process safety knowledge and understand government regulations (OSHA/EN-ISO) and consensus standards (ANSI/NFPA).
Compensation and Benefits:
- The expected compensation range for this position is between $118,700 - $198,800.

- Bonus based on performance and eligibility target payout is 15% of annual salary paid out annually.
- Paid time off subject to eligibility, including paid parental leave, vacation, sick, and bereavement.

Qualifications
- BS, Masters, or PhD in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical or Industrial Engineering.
- Machine Safety Experience (9+ Years)
- Functional Safety Certification (CMSE - Certified Machinery Safety Expert, CFSE, TUV FSExp, ISA SIS Expert) Required.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulics. Desire for certified electrician.
- Controls engineering experience including knowledge of Safety PLCs.
Advanced knowledge regarding regulations and standards including:
- OSHA 29 CFR 1910, Subpart O, including: OSHA 1910.212 & OSHA 1910.219.
- CE & ISO safety standards.
- ANSI B11.19 - Performance Requirements for Risk Reduction Measures.
- ANSI B11.0 - Safety of Machinery.
- NFPA 79 (Chapters 9 and 10).
- ANSI/RIA R15.06, if/as applicable.
- Familiarity with NFPA standards including, NFPA70E, NFPA86 and NFPA66
- Understanding of the limits and interfaces between manufacturer and operator's responsibilities and obligations.
- Strong understanding of occupational health and safety regarding the environment and human behavior.
