Job Description

NREL's Learning & Organizational Development team is seeking a full-time, in-house Succession & Leadership Development Program Leader to support NREL's growth and development. This role combines elements of strategy, facilitation and consulting to provide a holistic approach to succession planning and leadership development for a hybrid workforce, while demonstrating flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and organizational needs.

The Succession & Leadership Development Program Leader will be responsible for the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of leadership and succession development programs across the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). This individual will oversee the identification and development of high-potential talent, ensure alignment with organizational leadership competencies, and deliver impactful leadership and professional development initiatives to employees. The role will involve close collaboration with the Learning & Organizational Development team, senior leaders, HR Business Partners, and external leadership development partners to drive managerial and leadership effectiveness at all levels.

Led by the Manager of Learning & Organizational Development, the team is highly collaborative, utilizing each person's unique experience to consult and deliver development and leadership solutions for the Lab. This role will be hybrid, spending part of the week on NREL's Golden, Colorado campus.

Responsibilities:

Succession Program Management:
  • Lead the identification and assessment process for successors, ensuring clear timelines and processes.
  • Own the development program for leaders at all levels, focusing on nurturing talent for key leadership roles.
  • Implement development plans that align with NREL's strategic priorities and future leadership needs.


Leadership Development:
  • Deliver high-impact leadership and professional development courses to NREL employees across various leader levels, adapting content and approach based on audience needs.
  • Act as the emcee and facilitator for leadership and professional development programs.
  • Roll out and integrate NREL's Leadership Competencies into existing programs, including performance management, interview processes, and training initiatives.
  • Facilitate Managing at NREL for new and emerging leaders 3-4 times annually, fostering leadership growth and succession readiness, and provide backup support to other team members.
  • Partner with Learning & Organizational Development team members to leverage Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) materials in enhancing leadership skills laboratory-wide, while staying current on industry trends and best practices.


Program Facilitation and Coaching:
  • Facilitate in-person and virtual leadership development experiences, with a focus on high-potential talent (approximately 30% of time).
  • Debrief 360 feedback and other assessments results in conjunction with leadership development programs.
  • Manage NREL's participation in Battelle and National Laboratory development programs, including overseeing the nomination process for participants.


Competency Development and Assessment:
  • Identify key leadership competencies and conduct assessments to evaluate and enhance leadership capabilities across the organization.
  • Develop and deliver team-building workshops and exercises aimed at improving team and leadership performance.


External Partnerships and Continuous Improvement:
  • Establish and maintain external partnerships for leadership coaching and development.
  • Drive consistency in leadership language, models, and tools across all leadership development programs to ensure a unified approach to leadership growth.
  • Continuously evaluate leadership programs to ensure alignment with the CCL 70/20/10 development model and NREL's strategic objectives.


Other Duties as Assigned:
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the overall success of the L&OD team and organizational objectives.
  • Support ad-hoc HR initiatives and special projects beyond the succession planning and leadership development functions.


Basic Qualifications
Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Applies extensive technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Contributes to the development of new concepts, techniques and standards. Considered internal subject matter expert. Extensive knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Excellent leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Experience facilitating personality and style assessments, ideally using Insights Discovery.
  • Experience facilitating 360 assessments and debriefs with senior leaders. CCL Benchmarks preferred.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Professional IV / Annual Salary Range: $97,800 - $176,000

NREL takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
