What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 ($92,300 - $151,000)
Within this job, successful candidates will have to opportunity to support the Laboratory's mission by serving as the subject matter expert for nuclear facility electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering matters, including all aspects of electrical safety, HVAC, power quality, fluid/utility systems, power monitoring, critical power reliability/redundancy issues, renovating rooms, modifying buildings and structural members, and developing new structures within and around the plutonium facility. Often in this role, engineers may perform engineering studies including short circuit, device coordination, equipment sizing, exterior lighting, fault current, arc flash for both medium and low voltage equipment, demolition, installation, upgrades, and repairs. Within this role, engineers will become familiar with pressure safety, leak testing requirements, piping supports, flow requirements, installing equipment on housekeeping pads or skids with the use of post-installed anchors, design cranes and crane girders/support structures, canopies, equipment support stands, piping/conduit supports, wall/floor/ceiling penetrations, and concrete slabs.

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 ($101,700 -$168,200)
In addition to the description above, engineers in this position will work alongside junior and senior engineers (e.g., fire protection, structural, mechanical, and electrical) and other peers in team settings to complete collaborative full-system design solutions through mentoring and leadership.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Knowledge with major commercial, industrial, or nuclear facility with a strong background in facility related systems (i.e. HVAC, Compressed Air).
  • Knowlegge of design, operation, and maintenance of facility related mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of trouble shooting mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in application of codes and standards in a highly regulated work environment, to include but not limited to the IBC, IEBC, ASHRE, B31.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform analysis and calculations required to support engineered solutions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and written with management, customers, peers, and maintenance personnel.

Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2:
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and review technical reports and studies as part of establishing and maintaining Technical Baseline for new and existing facility structural systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to define and collect the usage, process, safety, and other requirements for the structure, system, or component design or analysis tasks, and prepare design concepts that meet the requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop design details, design or analysis calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections that incorporate the applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements, as applicable.
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating and trending system health.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer during the development of the design as the Mechanical SME.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineering interns and other engineers.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 2 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with chilled water systems.
  • Experience with mechanical system computational software for mechanical systems (i.e., AFT Fathom/Arrow, Pipe Flow).
  • Experience with nuclear air handling system requirements.
  • Experience with mechanical system computational software for mechanical systems (i.e., Train Trace, Pipe Flow).
  • Experience as a mechanical engineer at a DOE non-reactor nuclear facility with a strong background in facility related mechanical systems (i.e. HVAC, Compressed Air).
  • Experience with the application of DOE Orders and Standards as related to facility systems.
  • Experience working within an ASME NQA-1 or similar quality program.

Work Environment:

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
