Job Summary

Develops and implements the overall designated industry banking practice credit underwriting and portfolio management strategy as part of the first line of defense for CIB's credit products organization. Directs the structuring and underwriting of new and renewal credit opportunities for both syndicated and bilateral lending activities for corporate and private equity sponsors, providing ongoing credit servicing, portfolio monitoring and problem loan identification within the Synovus risk framework. Actively supports Coverage partners with guidance regarding key underwriting considerations both from a credit and policy perspective, as well as participating in client calls to win new business and grow existing relationships. Advocates and advises with Credit partners on attractive new and renewal credit opportunities, and situationally approves loans and other credit exposure within specified limits in accordance with company credit policies and risk guidelines. Provides oversight for strategy and performance objectives of the organization as well as communicating adjustments as risk appetite changes.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Leads credit delivery efforts within designated industry coverage team(s), including new money, renewals, amendments, modifications and restructures. Ensures credit requests are underwritten to prudent risk standards and are in compliance with Synovus policy and procedures. Assesses credit issues, performance and industry trends, appropriateness of structural terms and conditions and takes appropriate steps to improve structure and mitigate risks. Serves as a key first line partner with Coverage and Product teams around client selection and transaction execution. Advocates and advises with Credit partners on attractive new and renewal credit opportunities, and situationally approves loans and other credit exposure within specified limits in accordance with company credit policies and risk guidelines.
  • Creates and maintains a strong control and early warning environment with timely portfolio and financial reviews, ratings assessments, collateral monitoring, tickler reporting system, and ensuring regulatory compliance, to maintain portfolio quality. Includes utilization of market intelligence reports along with cycle position considerations by market and loan type to proactively manage exposures. Monitors industry trends and changes to maintain a forward-looking view of the industry to identify new risks and opportunities.
  • Maintains an environment where team members are empowered and highly engaged in delivering credit solutions to clients and prospects, achieving strong collaboration alongside relationship managers and key product partners in CIB's lines-of-business. Ensures teams are adequately trained and educated on industry and deal-specific structuring aspects, risk identification and risk migration.
  • Directs workflow improvement initiatives, optimizes resources, and builds out an environment that supports the achievement of CIB's goals and budget. Works closely with leadership to evaluate, design and implement policies, procedures, strategies and process changes within the Credit Products Organization.
  • Serves as a point of contact and partners with CIB leadership to achieve satisfactory or better ratings from Credit Review and external regulators. Meets targets for annual reviews, risk ratings, and covenant compliance monitoring.
  • Manages the annual performance management and merit processes for direct and indirect reports. Coaches and develops team members and builds a work environment where team members are engaged and feel a positive sense of achievement about their role in the company. Works closely with Human Resources regarding employee relations, compensation, training, posting and filling vacant positions and other Human Resources related matters.
  • Each team member is expected to be aware of risk within their functional area. This includes observing all policies, procedures, laws, regulations and risk limits specific to their role. Additionally, they should raise and report known or suspected violations to the appropriate Company authority in a timely fashion.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Risk, Business Administration or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum experience:
  • Nine (9) or more years of experience in corporate lending, loan structuring and approval, credit analysis, underwriting, and portfolio management as well as experience in a team management/leadership role

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Advanced experience underwriting leveraged, sponsor-backed, bridge financing and other complex transactions of syndicated and bilateral lending
  • Advanced understanding of capital markets in partnership with coverage and product teams to originate and execute credit delivery of complex transactions.
  • Strong understanding of general credit and risk principles, mitigating factors, and banking policies and procedures.
  • Skill providing a balanced approach to enable focus on both business unit goals and risk management objectives.
  • Skill developing and executing strategic solutions and systems in support of Credit Risk and business unit goals and objectives.
  • Able to multi-task and function under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and negotiation skills
  • Flexible change agent able to lead both process and organizational changes.
