Salary Range Starting at: $76,500.00

Job Objective:

As the Director of Development, you will advance The Salvation Army's mission through strategic growth and stewardship of relationships, partnerships, and resources across Central Indiana. This role leads a comprehensive development program, integrating fundraising, marketing and communications, donor relations, volunteer engagement, and special event strategies. This position serves as a visionary partner to the Area Commander, working collaboratively with Divisional Headquarters and internal and external stakeholders to grow organizational capacity, amplify mission, and steward a culture of generosity and community engagement ...ensuring that the Mission of The Salvation Army is effectively carried out.

What You Will Do:
  • Lead and implement a comprehensive development plan encompassing major gift, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, planned giving, and grants.
  • Cultivate a portfolio of current and prospective donors, ensuring thoughtful engagement, solicitation, and stewardship strategies aligned with organizational priorities
  • Collaborate with Divisional and local leaders on capital campaigns, endowment efforts, and other strategic initiatives.
  • Collaborate with grant writers, ensuring alignment with funding priorities, program needs, and collaborative grant applications across units.
  • Leverage donor data and insights to track engagement and optimize fundraising efforts.
  • Partner with corps officers and unit leaders to define fundraising goals and evaluate progress toward key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Other tasks as assigned by leadership

Leadership and Collaboration
  • Serve as a member of the CIAC Management team, contributing to organizational strategy, planning, and cross-functional leadership
  • Partner with the Area Commander to support Advisory Board and Echelon engagement
  • Collaborate with Corps Officers and program leaders to ensure alignment between development efforts and programmatic priorities

Volunteer Engagement
  • Oversee the CIAC Volunteer Manager and guide volunteer engagement initiatives reflection the values of The Salvation Army
  • Support the recruitment, onboarding, and recognition of volunteers across all programs and events
  • Promote a culture of volunteer appreciation and integration into the broader mission

Marketing, Communications, and Public Engagement
  • Supervise the CIAC Communications Manager to ensure mission-centered storytelling, brand consistency, and public visibility
  • Serve as a spokesperson for CIAC at public events and in media opportunities, amplifying awareness and community trust
  • Collaborate with Divisional communications staff on PR initiatives, press releases, and strategic outreach

Events Strategy and Community Activation
  • Collaborate with all applicable stakeholders to provide strategic direction and oversight for all CIAC seasonal events and outreach activities (e.g. Red Kettle Campaign, Coats for Kids, Angel Tree/ Toy Shop) ensuring alignment with development goals and mission impact
  • Support the Special Events Manager in planning and executing high-impact events that engage donors, volunteers, and the broader community
  • Represent The Salvation Army at external events, cultivating new relationships and partnerships


Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, skills, and/or abilities required for this position.

Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g. Business Administration, Communications or Public Relations, Nonprofit Management), or 5 years' experience in related field

Background Checks: Position requires a background check to be completed, and all background check results will be reviewed.

Experience: Demonstrated success in fundraising, strategic development, donor cultivation/stewardship, and grant development.

Supervisory experience in multi-disciplinary, collaborative environment

Certifications: Must have a valid driver's license and maintain The Salvation Army Driver's qualification standard; must complete Safe From Harm training within the first 90 days of employment. (when appropriate add: "must complete Caseworker Certification Program within 120 days of employment")

CFRE certification preferred

Skills/Abilities:
  • Able to speak, write and understand English in a manner sufficient for effective communication with leadership, field personnel, and clientele.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft products and ability to learn electronic reporting systems.

Supervisory Responsibility: Communications Coordinator, Events Manager, Volunteer Manager

Physical Requirements Include:
  • Good speaking, hearing and vision ability, and excellent manual dexterity

Travel: Travel required within the Central Indiana Area Command, with occasional travel throughout the state or to Chicagoland for training and event purposes. May require overnight travel.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a (office, warehouse, medical facility, church) environment; may require some weekend and evening work
