Smurfit Westrock is looking for a dynamic, results-driven learning & development leader who can deeply understand and integrate the business strategy, talent strategy and workforce dynamics to enable Smurfit Westrock's businesses to execute on their priorities.

This exciting career opportunity will utilize the successful candidate's learning & development experience when partnering with HRBPs, Business Leaders and COEs to develop a variety of innovative solutions for Smurfit Westrock.

The incumbent will report to the Talent & Inclusion VP for North America and manage a team responsible for embedding learning & development strategies within the business. Success will be measured by the adoption of Smurfit Westrock's learning & development curriculum and outcomes related to functional, commercial, and operational capability, leadership development, and learning experience and technology.

Responsibilities:

As the Senior Director of Learning & Development, you will be responsible for:
  • Oversee the design, deployment and delivery of learning programs that are aligned with Smurfit Westrock's strategic goals, ensuring they are engaging, effective, and accessible.
  • Leverage technology and develop creative, innovative ways to enhance the organization's ability to deliver effective and efficient training programs, utilizing cutting-edge learning management systems (LMS), e-learning platforms, and other educational technologies.
  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a direct report and matrixed team of L&D professionals, fostering a culture of continuous development and high performance.
  • Direct the assessment of skill gaps and training needs, the creation of training content and materials, and the coordination and delivery of training sessions. Conduct professional development needs analyses.
  • Utilize a variety of learning modalities, including e-learning, instructor-led training, workshops, and hands-on technical sessions.
  • Measure the effectiveness of learning interventions through robust evaluation methods and utilize data to drive continuous improvement.
  • Develop and manage the L&D budget, ensuring the efficient use of resources to maximize impact.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in L&D to ensure that Smurfit Westrock remains at the forefront of learning and development best practices.


What you need to succeed:
  • Master's or Bachelors degree in a related field strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in learning and development or related field.
  • Proven success in designing and implementing enterprise-wide learning and development strategies in a large, complex business organization resulting in meaningful outcomes.

  • Experience with learning management systems and learning experience technology.

  • Excellent leadership, stakeholder management, and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate data into meaningful business insights and strategies.
  • HR business partner experience is desired.
  • Excellent internal consulting skills with the ability to influence cross-functional peers and senior leaders.
  • Proven history of successfully leading organizations through change utilizing change management best practices.
  • Proven people management skills, including demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and able to react to shifting priorities to meet business needs.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, deep curiosity, and strong critical thinking skills.
  • Naturally collaborative with others, having worked in a matrixed organization to achieve organizational goals and to identify and resolve problems.
  • Global industry experience is beneficial (corrugated, food service, folding carton packaging, manufacturing) but not required.
