The Opportunity

Are you passionate about shaping the future of apprenticeship programs and driving operational excellence? SAIT is seeking a dynamic and strategic leader to join our team as the Director, Apprenticeship. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Academic, you will oversee and manage apprenticeship procedures and portfolio performance, ensuring alignment with SAIT's strategic priorities and government requirements. This role involves influencing various parties to ensure consistent and effective business practices and continuous enhancement of apprenticeship program administration.

As the Director, Apprenticeship, you will be accountable for optimizing processes, evaluating and maintaining program performance, and building strong relationships across the apprenticeship ecosystem. You will work collaboratively across the organization to achieve operational excellence and ensure program quality and student success.

The Role
    • Participate as a key member of SAIT's Senior Academic Leadership Team (SALT), guiding the strategic direction of apprenticeship programs.
    • Represent SAIT on the Individual Learning Module (ILM) steering committee, and collaborate with academic schools to develop, integrate, and optimize apprenticeship procedures.
    • Govern apprenticeship programs to meet industry standards and SAIT's quality benchmarks, ensuring compliance with the Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Act (STAEA) and related regulations.
    • Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, implementing improvements to enhance student success and program quality.
    • Utilize strong analytical skills to interpret program data, understand budgets and forecasts, and make informed decisions.
    • Oversee the administration of provincial examinations and certifications, including Red Seal endorsements, ensuring our students are well-prepared for their careers.
    • Develop and maintain strong partnerships with federal and provincial government representatives, post-secondary institutions, employers, sponsors, and industry associations.
    • Advocate for the collective interest of all apprentice programs within SAIT and the broader community, fostering participation and synergy across the organization.
    • Understand the broader institutional impact of decisions, ensuring actions in one area positively influence other programs and departments.
    • Influence and collaborate with partners across the institution to drive program success.
    • Plan and oversee workforce development events to promote apprenticeship programs and engage parties.
    • Provide an institutional perspective to align resources, subject matter, and faculty expertise, maximizing the student experience and program quality.
    • Lead the evolution of the Office of Apprenticeship to meet current and future needs, developing strategies to manage growth and decline in apprenticeship activity.
    • Guide the development and implementation of new apprenticeship programs, ensuring they are technically sound and evidence-based.
    • Hire, onboard, and mentor staff, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment that enables team members to excel and achieve their full potential.
    • Educate the SAIT community on the apprenticeship systems.


Qualifications & Experience
    • Recognized Journeyperson trade certificate with Interprovincial Standards Red Seal in one or more of Alberta's designated trades
    • Bachelor's or Master's degree in business, education, technology, or a related field is preferred
    • Blue Seal endorsement indicating business acumen is preferred
    • Minimum seven years of leadership experience
    • Minimum ten years of apprenticeship/trade experience
    • Experience on apprenticeship boards or advisory committees is preferred
    • Ability to develop long-term strategies for the growth and sustainability of apprenticeship programs
    • Project management experience is preferred
    • Strong strategic thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building abilities
    • Thorough knowledge of the STAEA and Alberta's apprenticeship system
    • Strong synergetic approach with partners across the organization
    • Excellent ability to build and maintain relationships with government representatives and industry peers
    • Strong analytical skills to interpret program data and make informed decisions


Job classification: Director

Salary range: $150,000 - 175,000

Paid Leave: 4 Weeks Vacation / 14 Flex Days per year
