Why does the job exist?

The Assistant Director of Nursing Services (ADON) assists the Director of Nursing Services (DNS) in planning, directing, coordinating, and supervising of the Nursing Department. The ADON is expected to perform duties of the DNS in his/her absence or as assigned.

How does it get done?

Ensures that resident care as delivered by nursing services meets the standards as defined by the Veterans Administration, Medicaid, State of New Mexico, Federal Guidelines, The Nursing Practice Act and the New Mexico Veterans' Home Policies and Procedures. Coordinates plans to promote the highest practicable level of well-being for NMSVH residents.
Ensures accurate and timely completion of all documentation related to nursing practice.
The ADON may be required to perform the RN Manager role, and/or the Charge Nurse role. The ADON is expected to temporarily assume some or the entire role of the Director of Nursing Services in that person's absence
Inspects the facility regularly to ensure that resident use areas and work areas are maintained at a high level of environmental safety and cleanliness. Ensures initiation of work orders for correction of problems or potential problems.
Coordinates and communicates with other departments to ensure provision of appropriate, adequate, timely and safe resident care.
Conducts staff meetings as directed by the Director of Nursing Services.
Assists with staffing needs, ensures adequate unit coverage, and assigns staff accordingly.
Reviews evaluations of the work performance and work habits of assigned staff. Ensures initiation of corrective and/or disciplinary action per policy and procedure.
Makes regular unit rounds to evaluate staff functioning and to ensure that resident care conforms to guidelines of regulatory and licensing bodies and current nursing standards.
Ensures the completion of work assignments and documentation related to nursing services daily.
Ensures the completion of shift specific assignments and documentation related to nursing services.
Prepares the nurse schedules q month one week before it's due and works closely with the agency companies to have proper nursing coverage for the unit floors.
Enforces the chain of command.
Informs the Director of Nursing Services of significant events and issues.
Delegates authority and responsibility as appropriate.

The primary customers are the brave men and women that answered our nations call, executed their duties and now are unable to live in their respective communities due to failing health. This job will also support the widows of the service men and women to include parents that have lost children in combat (Gold Star Parents)

Ideal Candidate

A Registered Nurse with experience working on the unit with direct resident care, multi-tasking, will take on call.

Minimum Qualification

Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico, or eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements, or eligibility for a temporary license issued for employment at a specific institution in New Mexico and three (3) years of management experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.

Employment Requirements

This position is designated safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules, and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.

Must possess and maintain a valid American Heart Association BLS / CPR Certification

Employment is subject to criminal background check pursuant to New Mexico Caregivers Criminal Screening Act, (Sections 29-17-2 through 29-17-5 NMSA 1978 and 7.1.9.1 through 7.1.9.11 NMAC) and is conditional pending results.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Successful completion of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) training.

Must possess and maintain a valid Safe Food Handling Certificate or receive within 1 week of date of hire.

Must sign and observe confidentiality agreement.

Must be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend the English language.

Occasional travel for training & meetings and driving a State of NM owned motor vehicle may be required; Working hours may include weekends, holidays, overtime, and callback hours. Essential functions of the job and specific physical ability requirements will be available at the time of interview or may be obtained at the New Mexico Veterans' Home Human Resources office.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a long-term care facility and office setting with exposure to visual/video display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Walking, standing, lifting, pushing, pulling, sitting and bending over are routine physical efforts required by the job. The ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds and the use of various types of medical equipment, computers and manual documentation. Sitting at a computer and entering data is necessary at times. Use of copier, telephone, and fax machine. Incumbent may be required to drive a State-owned vehicle. Incumbent may be exposed to physical and verbal abuse from residents, moderate noise levels and stressful situations. Health hazards include routine exposure to resident illness blood and bodily fluids. and potential for chemical sensitivity exist related to repeated us of latex gloves, disinfectant agents, wound dressing medications or chemicals. Overtime is an essential function of this positions. Essential functions of the job and physical ability requirements will be available at the time of interview or may be obtained at the New Mexico Veterans' Home Human Resources.
