SUMMARY:

The Senior Accountant is responsible for preparing, tracking, and evaluating day-to-day accounting activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, and monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, developing, implementing, and enhancing procedures for collecting, analyzing, verifying, and reporting financial information in accordance with IFRS. The role supports both operational and technical accounting functions, with a focus on derivatives accounting and timely communication with internal teams and HQ.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting activities, ensuring accuracy and compliance across general ledger operations.
  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes in accordance with IFRS requirements.
  • Perform reconciliation and validation of derivative transactions, including mark-to-market valuations.
  • Prepare, review, and post journal entries to the general ledger with supporting documentation.
  • Reconcile balance sheet and income statement accounts on a monthly basis, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
  • Monitor and interpret accounting data to produce timely and meaningful financial reports and statements.
  • Implement and enforce appropriate accounting policies, procedures, and methodologies in accordance with IFRS.
  • Coordinate and support the execution of the annual financial audit, serving as a key point of contact for auditors.
  • Maintain organized and up-to-date financial records and audit-ready documentation of all accounting transactions.
  • Support the Accounting Manager in the preparation and review of monthly and quarterly reporting for internal management and executive teams.
  • Assist in the preparation, updating, and analysis of budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, HQ, external auditors, and tax advisors to support reporting and compliance activities.

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple deadlines effectively.
  • Strong understanding of commodity trading accounting principles, including mark-to-market journal entries, IFRS 9, and hedge accounting.
  • Experience in retail power operations is a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; experience with accounting systems and financial databases.
  • Skilled in analyzing large data sets to identify trends, variances, and key insights.
  • Solid knowledge of accounting principles, practices, standards, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with a strong focus on accuracy and completeness.
  • Comfortable working in a multicultural or cross-functional environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and implement improvements to monthly accounting processes and overall team productivity.
  • Working knowledge of IFRS reporting standards.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and take initiative while remaining dependable and team-oriented.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • More than 5 years direct experience in Accounting required.
  • Public Accounting experience (preferred)
  • NetSuite and Allegro (preferred)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field required

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Fluent verbal and written skills in English.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS:
  • CPA preferred but not required

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. Physical demands include:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and may need to routinely move around to communicate with different groups
  • Occasionally work late to meet with Tokyo office
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must have a valid DL.
