DPL is hiring a department Library Supervisor at the Central Library. This role leads a dynamic team in performing professional library work with a focus on adult customers, including circulation, reference, programming, collection maintenance, and advisory services. The position entails supervising and training staff, collaborating with other Central Library leadership, and maintaining welcoming and engaging spaces.
The ideal candidate is committed to providing a welcoming environment for all customers while fostering curiosity through promotion of library resources. This person prioritizes connecting and building relationships with library customers while providing equitable access to library collections and spaces. They will demonstrate accountability to the diverse communities we serve through effective stewardship of library resources.
About Our Location
The recently renovated Central Library is located in the Golden Triangle district in Downtown Denver. Surrounded by some of the city's most prominent museums, government buildings, and parks, the Central Library serves as both a destination for researchers, literary enthusiasts, and visitors as well as the neighborhood library for downtown residents seeking technology access, library materials, enriching programs, and spaces to connect.
Please note that there are no free parking options surrounding our building, but it is easily accessible by public transportation.

- Experience in presenting and providing library services to customers of varying levels of knowledge and experience.
- A demonstrated commitment to developing and maintaining a welcoming environment for all.
- Knowledge of popular materials and resources for adults and of current trends in library programming.
- Skills in providing programming, reference, and advisory services to all ages.
- Skill in providing strong, dedicated, inclusive, and compassionate leadership.
- Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and trauma-informed skills, positive attitude, cultural sensitivity, and sense of humor in working with customers of all ages and backgrounds, coworkers, and community.
- Ability to participate on multiple leadership teams, including building-wide person in charge shifts, public services leadership team, collaboration and cross-training across Central, and adult services system-wide collaboration
- Ability to creatively problem-solve, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.
- Ability to recruit, train, connect, motivate, and retain an equitably diverse team that is reflective of the community.
- Ability to evaluate staff, set goals and priorities to help staff reach a targeted outcome.
- Ability to support organizational goals to maintain morale, to coach staff, and implement progressive discipline if necessary.
- Ability to handle multiple responsibilities, prioritize and set boundaries.
- Ability to steward all department activities through scheduling and assigning work to ensure department service needs are met.
- Ability to keep track of the department budget in alignment with library strategic objectives and values.
- Ability to calmly listen and respond to customers' complaints and emergency situations.
- Ability to interpret and communicate library policies to staff and customers.
- Ability to coordinate and implement emergency preparedness standards.
- Ability to use extensive workplace and other technology including email, internet, databases, eMedia, social media, and other software, with ability to work in a virtual environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in library and information science from ALA accredited institution of higher learning or equivalent degree in related field as required.
- Three (3) years of supervisory experience in a retail or public service operational setting, or three (3) years of professional library experience with at least one (1) year in a leadership role.
- No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
