What You Will Do

The Pit Technologies (PT) Division Leader (DL) will provide strategic direction for the division including a shared vision with the senior management team on program, capability, and workforce development to deliver and sustain rate production of at least 30 pits/year by 2028. The selected candidate will report directly to the Nuclear Production Senior Director (ALDWP-NP). The DL will also ensure that the division delivers on programmatic commitments, sets a vision for the future direction of the organization, and coordinates with the Associate Laboratory Director of Weapons Production Directorate (ALDWP) and key stakeholders to meet the directorate's goals, objectives, and commitments.

As Division Leader, the successful candidate will bring a strong background in manufacturing with demonstrated success in one or more areas of the pit manufacturing flowsheet. The Division Leader will take a lead role in developing an integrated strategy for assuring the safety, performance, and reliability of manufacturing and production operations. The Division Leader is also responsible for strengthening the technical base, skill base, and improving engineering expertise of the growing Division staff while setting standards for professional behavior and operational effectiveness. The successful candidate must be results oriented with solid leadership, management, communication and interpersonal skills. As a member of the division senior management team, the DL is responsible for promoting safety, security, and quality in all operations; mentoring and developing personnel; promoting teamwork within the division and across the Laboratory; and demonstrating effective leadership behaviors that promote a positive, collaborative work environment.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:
  • Provide senior leadership to enable the workforce to succeed in division milestone and deliverables.
  • Provide technical leadership and innovation in the area of pit manufacturing with a goal of growing the next generation of technical leaders across LANL
  • Contribute to defining and articulating strategic visions and goals, and to developing and executing programs/projects to support them.
  • As a recognized authority within the Laboratory, broker with executive-level external and internal customers to determine what work will be done to meet the customers' needs, general timeframes, and funding requirements.
  • Be a proactive member of the ALDWP leadership team in defining and supporting the Laboratory's National Security mission.
  • Maintain and strengthen the division's scientific and technical base by participating in the development and programmatic direction for the division.
  • Work with division leaders, group leaders, and program managers to ensure effective line and program planning and integration.
  • Identify and act on opportunities to influence direction, policy and vision, both internal and external to the organization.
  • Maintain a positive work environment and mentoring and developing personnel.
  • Recruit and retain critical skills in the workforce.
  • Support diversity, affirmative actions, ES&H, security, and community relations.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

SME Nuclear Operations: Expert-level knowledge of and demonstrated successful experience in at least two of the following areas: nuclear operations and production facility management, stockpile stewardship and management, life extension programs, pit development, plutonium strategy, pit surveillance, weapon quality, DoD nuclear programs, or civilian nuclear programs.

Conduct of Operations: Expert knowledge and demonstrated successful experience performing superior Conduct of Operations, with specific examples of helping to ensure that management systems are designed to anticipate and mitigate the consequences of human fallibility or potential latent conditions, and provide a vital barrier to prevent injury, environmental insult or asset damage, and to promote mission success.

Strategic Planning: Successful experience in leading a management team in organizational strategic planning initiatives to include establishing, monitoring, and reporting on performance metrics.

Leadership: Demonstrated successful experience in providing leadership, supervision, and retention and development of assigned employees including performance management, team building, problem solving, and conflict resolution.

Stakeholder Communication: Proven experience to interact and effectively communicate with staff, customers, program managers, and other key stakeholders, both internal and external.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Experience as a strong, team-oriented leader with a demonstrated ability to build successful and productive collaborations across organizational boundaries including both programs and line functions.

Change Management: Demonstrated ability to assign clear authority and accountability, and effectively implementing, directing, and managing change while maintaining efficient operations.

Mission Integration: Demonstrated successful experience integrating priorities and commitments, including safety, security, environmental compliance, quality, contractor assurance, and business imperatives.

Operational Engagement: Demonstrated successful record of effective interpersonal and communication skills as evidenced by stakeholder interactions, seminars, briefings, and presentations.

Business Operations: Demonstrated experience leading business operations to include financial, human resources, procurement, and other related business activities.
Nuclear Qualification: DOE Order 426.2 requires BS degree, and four years nuclear experience.

Education/Experience:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Scientific discipline from an accredited institution and 12 years of experience in two or more of the following functions: project management, project control, engineering, procurement or construction leading to a thorough understanding of the knowledge described above; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in chemistry, materials science, engineering or a related science.
  • Nuclear Facility Operations: Demonstrated experience with nuclear material management, as well as nuclear or radiological facility operations.
  • Executive Liaison: Demonstrated and proven ability to represent the Laboratory in the high-level programmatic interactions within the defined portfolio with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD), other customer agencies, and with Congress.
  • National Security Alignment: Knowledge of the ALDWP technical, manufacturing portfolio and an understanding of how the operations broadly supports LANL's national security mission areas including Weapons, Global Security, and Energy Programs.
  • Strategic Sponsor Interface: Familiarity with and experience working with ALDWP's major program sponsors, both internal and external to the Laboratory, including knowledge of nuclear engineering and/or nonproliferation related programs.
  • Clearance/Certification: Active DOE Q-Clearance and HRP certification.

Work Environment:

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, 712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
