In addition to the responsibilities of a Principal Engineer the Piping Systems Engineering Supervisor will lead, oversee, and manage a team of engineers, technicians, and/or designers, as assigned to the mechanical engineering team, in the design, development, testing, and support of piping and fluid systems, projects, or tasks. The supervisor will report directly to the Manager of Mechanical Engineering.
  • Lead Piping Systems efforts across multiple programs.
  • Responsible for engineering products produced by the Piping Systems group.
  • Manage engineering processes to ensure that quality, schedule, and cost performance goals are achieved on all programs.
  • Facilitate communication between Engineering and Design to ensure both teams are successful in the functional and detail design process.
  • Interface with, and support, Design, Engineering, Program Office, Systems Integration, and Concept.
  • Interface with and support Design, Engineering, Program Office, Systems Integration and Concept Design Development, Change Management, Estimating, Contracts, Materials, Planning, Manufacturing, Navy and other customer organizations as required.


Key Responsibilities
  • Safety Leadership:
    • Be a safety leader for your team and ensure that each person leaves in the condition they came in.
    • Ensure all safety trainings are completed on time.
    • Support Safety Team initiatives, and support projects as required.
  • Project Execution:
    • Responsible for all engineering products, in your area of responsibility, produced by the mechanical engineering team.
    • Provide project oversight to all current work in development by the team both internal and external.
    • Create Plan of the Week (POW) in support of company goals and align staff to appropriate tasks. Work with all impacted teams to ensure the overall schedule is achieved.
  • Engineering Management:
    • Lead efforts, including mechanical engineering and associated instrumentation development across multiple programs.
    • Set appropriate team expectations for completion of goals (S.M.A.R.T. Goals).
    • Ensure accountability of task and goal completion.
    • Manage engineering processes to ensure that quality, schedule and cost performance goals are achieved on all programs.
    • Perform supervisory and administrative duties including resource management, employee development, safety, performance evaluations, statusing, progressing work, assist with hiring, honoring labor contracts, and employee time verification.
  • Training and Development:
    • Provide technical training, guidance, and leadership to assigned personnel.
    • Establish and maintain effective work procedures and instructions for engineering processes.
    • Provide onboarding and mentor plans for new engineers entering the team.
  • Team Collaboration and Communication:
    • Ensure proper communication among the team and with other groups both internal and external.
    • Facilitate communication between Engineers and Designers to ensure successful engineering and design processes.
    • Interface with, and support, Design, Engineering, Program Office, Systems Integration and Concept Design Development, Change Management, Estimating, Contracts, Materials, Planning, Manufacturing, Navy and other customer organizations as required.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Ensure proper up-to-date process documentation for all mechanical engineering processes.
    • Focus on Lean Six Sigma principles to both remove waste and variation from processes.
    • Create plans for recurring review of processes for areas of improvement and conduct and projects to improve efficiency, reduce cost, and reduce cycle times.
    • Help achieve overall company CI goals, including waste reduction, and workflow improvements


Required/Preferred Education/Training

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Marine Engineering/Naval Architecture from an ABET accredited university or college required.
  • Working knowledge of the following discipline is required: Piping Systems, purchase specifications, system diagrams, and associated calculations.
  • Working knowledge of electro-mechanical equipment and its operation, including pumps, transducers, solenoid operated valves, etc.


Required/Preferred Experience

  • Minimum 8 years of technical experience required; breadth of shipbuilding and marine engineering experience is relevant.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and inspire teams of Engineers.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organization and people skills.
  • Working knowledge of Earned Value Management System (EVMS).
  • Broad knowledge of regulatory requirements (Naval Ship Specs., ABS, etc.).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Lean Design and Engineering principles.
  • Must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a Secret level Security Clearance.
    • This position requires you to be able to obtain a government security clearance. You must be a US Citizen for consideration, and you must be able to obtain an interim security clearance within the first 45 days of hire.
