Job Summary
The assistant director, Student Nutrition is responsible for assisting the senior director, Student Nutrition in planning and coordinating budgets, systems, financial management of school food programs, personnel management, inventory and resource management, and other administrative duties. The assistant director strives to promote student physical and emotional well-being and improve capacity to learn by maintaining an effective Student Nutrition program that makes efficient use of time, tools, and other resources. The assistant director assesses systems and policies and recommends improvements within the framework of federal, state and local regulations and budget limitations. This is a supervisory position that will frequently require response to emergency situations beyond the normal working hours. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  • A bachelor's degree in nutrition, logistics, business administration or a related field. Equivalent experience, education, and training may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement.
  • Five years of experience in food service support, supply chain management, and budgetary oversight with increasingly responsible supervisory and administrative experience dealing with logistics and food service support, the general public, and other professionals.
  • Ability to lead, supervise, evaluate, and train staff in small organizations.
  • Organizational and communication skills; and technical knowledge of financial systems and procedures, personnel and facilities management, and operations and emergency planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as an effective team leader.
  • Proven ability to plan and manage operational processes for maximum efficiency and productivity.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office systems and database systems.

  • The following are preferred:
  • A master's degree in food service systems, business administration, or a related field.
  • Seven to 10 years of managerial experience in a multi-faceted logistics or food service organization.
  • Management experience overseeing logistics and food service support, production and quality control, planning, scheduling, training, contracting, and/or purchasing. Preference will be given to those with a combination of these skills.
  • Ability to interpret and implement established procedures and regulations with associates, vendors, and the general public.
  • Familiarity with United States Department of Agriculture federally funded programs.
  • Experience working with labor unions and contracts.

  • Essential Job Functions
  • Develops, implements, and monitors daily operational systems and processes, ensuring visibility into goals, progress, and obstacles for key ASD initiatives.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with all department heads, external partners, and vendors to make decisions regarding operational activity and strategic goals.
  • Plans, monitors, and analyzes key metrics for the daily performance of Student Nutrition operations to ensure efficient and timely completion of tasks.
  • Devises strategies to ensure growth of programs, identifying and implementing process improvements that will maximize output and minimize costs.
  • Upholds organization policies and standards, ensuring compliance with all policies and regulations.
  • Analyzes current operational processes and performance, recommending solutions for improvement when necessary.
  • Synchronizes staff actions within Student Nutrition in order to assure efficient and effective conduct of operations.
  • Assists with planning, coordinating, and implementing the school nutrition programs: school breakfast, lunch, after school snacks, and after school meals in 84 school cafeteria sites.
  • Evaluates school food service units to determine effectiveness in achieving program goals. Recommends procedural or organizational changes in order to achieve mission success.
  • Enforces federal, state, and local regulations regarding nutritional standards, reports, and records. Prepares and maintains all records for required audits and reviews.
  • Assists with responding to inquiries and requests from other departments, school administrators, parents, and outside organizations.
  • Assists in the development and monitoring of department budget allocations, expenditures, fund balances, and related financial activities to ensure that allocations are accurate, revenues are recorded, expenses are within budget limits, and/or fiscal practices are followed.
  • Assists in department personnel management such as selection of new hires, promotions, terminations, transfers, supervision, discipline, training, etc., in order to maintain staffing needs and productivity of the work force.
  • Monitors safety to ensure equipment and operations are conducted in a safe manner and in compliance with OSHA/AKOSH requirements.
  • Directs, supervises, and evaluates department supervisors and other staff as assigned.
  • Manages and acts as Project Manager for all technology upgrades and installations for the department.
  • Assumes responsibilities of the director of Student Nutrition in the director's absence.
  • Collaborates with internal and external administrators, auditors, public agencies, community members, vendors, etc. for the purpose of implementing and/or maintaining services and programs.

  • Physical /Mental Demands
    The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
