Responsibilities of the Office of General Counsel of the office include interpreting the constitutional, statutory and regulatory framework in which the University operates, managing outside counsel and litigation and agency complaints, and providing legal and policy advice in a variety of areas within the University, including employment law, student legal issues, intellectual property, real estate, contracts, organizational governance, affiliated entities, sponsored research, disabilities, drug-free workplace requirements, computer and information technology issues, copyright issues, defamation issues, civil rights, sexual harassment, promotion and tenure, peer review processes, statutory and regulatory compliance, and fundraising.
Position Overview
This position is responsible for providing legal representation and advice to the University of Idaho on matters related to official University business. This includes interpreting legal frameworks, managing litigation and external counsel, as well as advising on issues such as employment, student matters, intellectual property, contracts, governance, research, compliance and more. The office does not offer legal advice to students unless they are acting as University employees and cannot advise individuals with claims against the University or its staff.

Duties may include:
- Serve as the second in command of the Office of General Counsel acting on behalf of the General Counsel when needed
- Lead the administration of the office by supervising associate attorneys, the administrative support staff and law clerks/externs
- Overseeing the budget, budget planning and records systems
- Provide legal advice and representation on various matters and to various university units, as assigned by the General Counsel, while also maintaining a general understanding of the full breadth of university legal matters so as to provide support to OGC associate counsel, law clerks and externs in legal matters assigned to them
- Work with the state of Idaho and federal agencies regarding the interests of the university including representing the university in judicial and administrative proceedings

Position Qualifications
Required Experience
- Ten years of experience as a practicing attorney
- Four years of experience providing legal counsel to an institution of higher education or in house legal counsel at a similarly complex organization with multiple constituencies
Required Education
- Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited institution
Required Other
- A license to practice law in the state of Idaho or another state
- Admission to the Idaho Bar is required within one year of hire
Additional Preferred
- Experience as in-house legal counsel at a public institution of higher education or a state government agency
- Experience providing legal counsel for institutions that have established research and sponsored programs
- Team leadership and management experience
