CCS was at the forefront of historic wins like bans on indoor smoking and exposure to asbestos, restrictions on cigarette advertising, and the extension of Canada's Employment Insurance sickness benefit. We have successfully pushed for more recent changes like improving access to mammograms, expanding access to job-protected medical leave and bringing awareness to the significant out-of-pocket costs of cancer borne by patients and caregivers. In this role, you will help CCS continue to drive progress to save lives and improve the health of all Canadians.

Reporting to the EVP, Mission, Research & Advocacy, the VP Advocacy leads a dedicated team shaping public health policies across Canada. The role is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with all levels of government in Canada to advance CCS's mission. The VP Advocacy provides strategic direction on both existing and new advocacy initiatives, promoting legislative and regulatory changes to alleviate the burden of cancer on Canadians. The VP Advocacy drives initiatives around cancer prevention, and better care to improve the lives of people affected by cancer (including patients, survivors and caregivers) through advocacy programs, policy development, public engagement and government relations. Working at national, provincial and territorial levels, the VP Advocacy drives meaningful systemic improvements to the experience of cancer in Canada.

Your Mission as VP Advocacy:
1. Nationwide Advocacy Strategy
- Lead the development and implementation of comprehensive advocacy strategies ensuring alignment with CCS strategy and goals to save and improve lives.
- Lead the development of policy recommendations, pre-budget submissions and correspondence to party leaders, cabinet ministers, parliamentary committees and public servants.
- Lead in the monitoring and analysis of cancer-related legislative and regulatory developments at municipal, provincial, and federal levels to identify risks and opportunities.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to maximize the impact of the advocacy strategy.
- Establish and track clear performance metrics to evaluate the success of advocacy initiatives.
- Promote diversity, inclusion, belonging and equity into all of CCS nationwide advocacy strategies and partnerships.
2. Stakeholder Engagement
- Champion CCS advocacy and cancer-related initiatives as a persuasive and impactful spokesperson.
- Establish and maintain relationships with key contacts at all levels of government, including MPs, provincial members of parliament, political staff and public servants.
- Represent CCS at public forums and in discussions with government officials at conferences, budget hearings and other political meetings to advance CCS's advocacy priorities.
- Lead grassroots advocacy efforts and mobilize supporters to take action by building a robust network of volunteer advocates.
- Build strong relationships with people with lived experience and key opinion leaders who can help advance CCS's advocacy work and improve cancer-related policy in Canada.
- Establish partnerships nationally and globally with other organizations to amplify advocacy impact.
3.Team and Portfolio Management
- Provide strategic oversight and leadership to the Advocacy team, to ensure cohesive and integrated advocacy efforts.
- Foster a high-performance culture that leverages the unique talents and strengths of each member while encouraging their growth and development.
- Oversee the design and implementation of impactful advocacy campaigns, leveraging data, technology and innovative tools and resources to enhance and modernize advocacy strategies.
- Optimize the advocacy budget and resources to drive maximum impact and meaningful results.
- Position CCS as a beacon of hope and leadership in the face of cancer, advocating powerfully and compassionately for change.
- Ensure all staff feel represented, valued, and heard across all aspects of their identity, including gender, age, religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, and sexuality.
- Shape public policies through recommendations, submissions, and correspondence with key political figures.
- Monitor cancer-related legislative developments at the municipal, provincial and federal levels of government and identify opportunities.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree with 10+ years in advocacy/government relations and proven leadership experience.
- Expertise in navigating federal and provincial processes and grassroots mobilization.
- Exceptional communicator and relationship builder with a vision for impactful outcomes.
- Proficiency in social media strategy; public relations (APR), business communications (ABC) or similar certifications and French bilingualism are assets.
