General Statement of Duties
Inspects facilities such as food service and processing establishments, sewage disposal operations, water supply facilities, beaches, swimming pools, substandard housing, and situations involving nuisance conditions and environmental impacts to ensure compliance with environmental health laws and ordinances. Educates the public in the promotion of proper sanitary and environmental conditions
Qualifications
Education and Experience:Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in public health, sanitary engineering or a related area of study, plus two (2) years of experience in the field of community environmental health.
Certification Requirements:
Licensed as a Registered Sanitarian in the State of Connecticut or must become licensed within three (3) years of hire date.
Certified by the State of Connecticut in Food Service Inspection and Subsurface Sewage Disposal Design Phases I and II, within two (2) years of hire date, if not already licensed as a Registered Sanitarian in the State of Connecticut
Qualifications:
Demonstrated knowledge of environmental health laws and regulations with proven ability to apply this knowledge to resolve unsanitary conditions.
Proven ability to review and approve technical plans for food service establishments, subsurface sewage disposal designs and building plans for license and/or permit approval.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrated ability to enforce health regulations courteously and tactfully.
Proven ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with business owners, the public, and coworkers.
Demonstrated proficiency in the use of a personal computer and industry specific software for record keeping and report preparation.
Demonstrated physical ability to perform all job functions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Independently inspects restaurants and food service establishments, ensuring compliance with health regulations.
Educates food service staff on proper sanitary food preparation practices.
Reviews, inspects, and approves the new construction and renovation of food service establishments and licensed personal care facilities to ensure compliance with health code regulations.
Reviews and approves engineering designs and septic installation plans for on-site sewage disposal systems. Conducts on-site inspections of installations for compliance with approved plans.
Investigates and resolves complaints about unsanitary conditions in locations such as garbage and sewage disposal facilities.
Conducts environmental investigations in response to elevated blood lead levels in children.
Inspects child day care facilities to ensure compliance with licensing standards.
Reviews architectural plans submitted for building permit approvals to ensure compliance with health code regulations.
Addresses health code violations, issues violation notices, prepares relevant documents and attends Housing Sessions as part of the State of Connecticut Judicial District docket.
Provides affidavits and testifies in court regarding the enforcement of local and State health codes.
Responds to public complaints about environmental issues, conducting inspections to ensure compliance with environmental health laws.
Educates the public on environmental health issues including Rabies, West Nile Virus, Lyme Disease, and other environmental diseases.
Conducts epidemiological investigations of food-borne disease outbreaks and prepares reports for the State of Connecticut Food Protection Program.
Stays current on emerging environmental health issues.
Supports Town policies and philosophies.
Performs related work as assigned.

All positions may be subject to an interview process. The Town reserves the right to limit the number of qualified candidates who will be invited to participate in the examination, or any part thereof.
