Faculty & Chairperson, Dental Public Health Position
Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry seeks applicants for the position of Chairperson, Department of Dental Public Health, with either a PhD level education in epidemiology, public health, or behavioral sciences and/or or a DDS/DMD in addition to an Master's degree in one of these subjects. Candidates with an appropriate education for board certification should be certified, with an outstanding clinician, educator, scientist, and communicator track record.
Responsibilities include didactic and clinical teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, management and oversight of the departmental curriculum, engagement in independent research, provision of faculty mentoring and staff management, evaluation of outcomes assessment, and assisting in recruitment of qualified faculty.
The position of Chair of Dental Public Health requires a dynamic, passionate, and capable academic leader with a proven track record across the spectrum of educational excellence, administrative experience, program development, individual scholarship, trainee recruitment, and community engagement. The ideal candidate will have an extensive knowledge of accreditation and public health competencies, and experience in incorporating dental public health throughout the dental education curriculum, both didactic and clinical
Candidates with a DDS/DMD should hold or be eligible for a license to practice in the State of Tennessee.

Essential Functions (Duties and Responsibilities) - Assign a percentage to each essential function (equal to 100%):
  • Academics, teaching didactic, clinical curricula, instructional, evaluative, testing materials


  • Academic Services, college, school and departmental committees, curriculum development, etc.


  • Administrative and Other services


  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Leadership experience, knowledge of key aspects of education in current academic dentistry.
  • Knowledgeable and engaged in the college and school's standards, policies.
  • Mentorship experience, provide professional and academic mentoring to faculty, students and staff in support of professional development and career progression.
  • Strong contributions in fostering inclusion, diversity and equality to enhance excellence in academic endeavors.
  • Maintain day-to-day administrative and departmental operations in support of faculty, residents, students, in the delivery of patient care, provision of services.
  • Participation in Committees Task Force, Course Curriculum and all other duties assigned in support of the Dean and the Dean's Vision for the SOD.


Education and Experience:

  • Candidates will require either:
  • A) A Ph.D. in Epidemiology, Public Health, or Behavioral Sciences
  • B) A D.D.S. and a Master's Degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, or Behavioral Sciences, and an appropriate Board Certification, as well as a license to practice in the State of Tennessee or eligible for licensure in the State of Tennessee
  • Strong and developed leadership skills.
  • Exceptional communication skills, experience in educating pre and post-doctoral education and ability to adapt, adjust and execute in a diverse and changing environment.
  • Experienced in full scope of Dental Public Health and in working with diverse students and patient populations of all ages.
