Role Mission: The HVAC Manager is responsible for ensuring the optimal performance, capacity preservation, reliability, and lifecycle management of school mechanical equipment. This role involves planning, organizing, and executing tasks necessary to maintain the effective operation of HVAC systems, supporting ongoing school functions. The manager supervises both in-house technicians and external contractors responsible for performing preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment. Key duties include setting priorities, ordering materials, managing budgets, and coordinating resources for all maintenance tasks. Additionally, the manager is responsible for submitting detailed preventative maintenance reports to campus leaders and ensuring that any system failures are swiftly addressed and repaired to minimize downtime and restore operations promptly.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The HVAC Manager supervises a team of HVAC preventative maintenance technicians across multiple regions where IDEA Public Schools operates.
Location:
This is a full-time position based in Texas with preference given to candidates who live in the Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio, and Austin regions, or who are willing to relocate.
Travel Expectations:
The role requires travel to various regions where we operate, averaging once a month for 3 to 5 days. Additionally, frequent daily travel to school sites within the base regions (Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio, and Austin) is expected to oversee and support ongoing preventative maintenance activities.

Salaries for people entering this role typically fall $74,764 and $87,100, commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications and in alignment with internal equity. This role is also eligible for performance pay based on organizational performance and goal attainment.

What You'll Do - Accountabilities
Essential Duties:
In addition to following IDEA Public Schools' policies and procedures, principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Ensures compliance with all applicable safety regulations, building codes, and safety requirements.
- Train and enforce safety procedures and all applicable regulations.
- Planning and Project support of ensuring utility restoration in the event of primary utility outages/interruptions.
- Extend the life of current assets with vigorous preventative maintenance.
- Using predictive techniques to adjust preventative maintenance to account for needs as they arise or before.
- Approve time off requests and technician's timesheets
- Supervise the preventative maintenance staff and schedule, track and document all maintenance, upgrades, and repairs.
- Establishes and conducts a preventive maintenance program of scheduled inspection and maintenance of HVAC equipment and facilities to assure proper operation and to correct malfunctions before major breakdowns develop.
- Creates work orders to report equipment having non preventative maintenance problems.
- Provide feedback on drawing and specification reviews of new work to ensure it conforms to site general practices and maintainability of the equipment.
- Assist in managing Capital Improvement Plan and facilities condition assessment data which identifies capital renewal needs and re-investment priorities.
- Anticipate and eliminate potential delays by planning and coordinating maintenance resources, supply chain, and equipment access.
- Provide guidance and supervision during emergency response to system or utility outages
- Manages the assigned budget for the department and follows the procurement policies in place to ensure good financial stewardship for the organization
- Clearly identifies the scope of work for HVAC preventive maintenance activities and properly communicates to campus leadership
- Develops preventive maintenance service reports and adequately communicates with all constituents including the Campus Facilities Managers, Assistant Principals of Operations, Principals, Regional Managers, and Directors.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
- Coordinate all planned maintenance and minor construction activities
- Identify and develop standard work routines and task lists
- Manage procurement process for parts and vendors
- Analyze work order feedback and execute follow-up actions
- Plan shutdown-related work
- Prepare budgeting, tracking, and analysis
- Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental goals and operations
Knowledge and Skills - Competencies:
- Recruit, Select, Train, Schedule, Coach HVAC preventive maintenance technicians
- Strong knowledge of the functions of HVAC trade and preventive maintenance procedures
- Communicate job expectations; planning, monitoring, appraising and reviewing job contributions
- Ability to manage a team and achieve ambitious operations and company goals and objectives
- General computer skills including various Building Automation Systems (BAS)
- Ability to perform budget analysis and reports and track performance against established benchmarks
- Ability to read, interpret, utilize and train on manuals, schematics and control circuits related to HVAC and the Building Automation System (BAS)
- Possession of effective verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent problem-solving and customer service skills
- Self-motivated individual with strong ability to follow instructions and work alone, as well as work effectively within a team
- Ability to display professional company image
- Ability to pass a background check for criminality
- Strong ability to write and read in English language
Required Experience & Qualifications:
- A high school diploma or G.E.D.
- Minimum of 3 years experience in the role of manager of a trades shop
- Minimum of 5 years experience in either HVAC or Facilities Management
- Experience in construction management or quality control/assurance
- Must possess a valid Driver's License
- Familiar working with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software and/or Building Automation/Management Systems (BAS/BMS)
- Environmental Protection Agency - EPA Universal Certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of employment
Preferred Experience & Qualifications:
- Associate or bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical engineering or a related field such as Facility Management or equivalent experience
- Master License in HVAC, Electrical, or Plumbing
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift items weighing up to 100lbs safely
- Strong ability to operate under severe temperature condition of 120 or more for long periods of time
- Ability to work during after-hours including weekends and holidays when required
