Johnson & Johnson, is recruiting for a Global Scientific Senior Director, 3Rs Portfolio Innovation & External Engagement Lead to be located in Spring House, PA or La Jolla, CA.

The Global Scientific Senior Director, 3Rs Portfolio Innovation & External Innovation Lead will guide and execute global and cross-sector in vitro and in silico strategies in support of J&J Innovative Medicine's discovery portfolio and J&J's commitment to the 3Rs (replacement, reduction, refinement) principles related to anima-based research and our commitment to the use non-animal alternatives when feasible.

The Global Scientific Senior Director, 3Rs Portfolio Innovation & External Innovation Lead will drive innovative collaborative approaches that can be readily applied to drug discovery research activities (e.g., organoids, AI/ML, computer simulations, biochemistry, etc.). The role will also proactively scan the external landscape for alternatives to ongoing animal-based testing and will triage and provide guidance for scientific execution and validation of alternatives relevant for pharmacology and safety sciences related outcomes. The role will be instrumental in ensuring J&J Innovative Medicine and J&J's active engagement in external organizations and participation in regulatory agency discussions related to alternatives.

In partnership with the J&J Animal Welfare Officer, the Global Scientific Senior Director, 3Rs Portfolio Innovation & External Innovation Lead will be instrumental in driving cross-sector workgroup activities for key strategic pillars and annual deliverables that will advance the J&J Animal Welfare Strategic Vision.

The Global Scientific Senior Director, 3Rs Portfolio Innovation & External Innovation Lead will be responsible for fostering a collaborative culture and will work with a large number of internal and external stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes. He/She will serve as a visible and effective change agent for global and cross-sector initiatives and will seek to provide strategic decision making for all areas of responsibility while nurturing the ideas of others.

This role will directly and indirectly (through matrix relationships) lead a team of DVM, PhD, MD and technical level staff providing leadership, mentorship, and career development opportunities for his/her team members. This role will be responsible for future innovation strategy, budget, resource and timeline commitments for in vivo models & scientific collaborations activities.

The Global Scientific Senior Director, 3Rs Portfolio Innovation & External Innovation Lead will have a desire for learning and innovation, and continue career development through participation in scientific meetings, and increase visibility for self, J&J Innovative Medicine, and J&J through publications, participation in external organizations, and presentations at major scientific, industry, and regulatory meetings.

  • Provide global leadership and management for 3Rs portfolio innovation activities, including partnering with research teams to identify key competencies and capabilities, establishing and planning for global 3Rs considerations and workflows, assures prioritization of work targeted toward impactful portfolio contributions, and building awareness of 3Rs
  • Develop strategies for assuring proactivity in translational portfolio innovation, including ensuring global activities are driven by operational excellence by defining metrics and key performance indicators
  • Interface with leaders and peers in other R&D teams (e.g. DPDS, all TAs) as a thought leader on 3Rs innovations related to the portfolio strategy, including designing, planning, and executing of scientific studies
  • Contribute to strategic and long-range planning for 3Rs innovation, business, resource and staff needs


Requirements:
  • Ph.D. degree in animal sciences, pharmacology, or other scientific disciplines or other advanced degrees (DVM, VMD or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited or recognized school of veterinary medicine)
  • A minimum of 15 years' experience of pharmaceutical/biotechnology scientific experience demonstrating the ability to develop and execute strategy across functional disciplines/sectors required
  • Demonstrated expertise in scientific conduct and advancement of the 3Rs
  • The overall background of experience and education should be sufficient to allow performance of the job requirements listed.
  • Working knowledge of US and international animal welfare guidelines, AAALAC standards, and broader R&D related regulatory landscape
  • Proven track-record in working with large complex, international teams, including direct people management experience.
  • Exceptional diplomacy and negotiating skills are required.
  • This role requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a high level of organizational ability and attention to detail and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience in project management and change management is essential


The anticipated base pay range for this position is $193,000 to $333,500.

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis.

    • Vacation - up to 120 hours per calendar year
    • Sick time - up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington - up to 56 hours per calendar year
    • Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays - up to 13 days per calendar year of Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
