The Opportunity

Reporting directly to the Manager, Policy and Heritage, this role is responsible for leading the development of planning policy through research, analysis, project management, and engagement with stakeholders. You will play a key role in managing complex planning projects such as secondary plans and official plan reviews. You will be responsible for providing expert planning advice, coaching junior staff, and representing the Town in planning matters and Ontario Land Tribunal hearings.

As the Senior Planner, Policy, you will perform the following duties, including but not limited to:

  • Lead and manage complex policy planning studies and projects such as official plan reviews, secondary plans, zoning by-law reviews, and Community Improvement Plans
  • Prepare detailed reports, recommendations, and implementation documents on a range of planning policy topics including housing, growth management, rural planning, and infrastructure
  • Represent the Town in inter-agency coordination, Ontario Land Tribunal hearings, mediations, and settlement negotiations
  • Provide expert planning advice to Council, staff, and the public, including mentoring junior staff
  • Conduct site visits and fulfill corporate responsibilities related to health and safety, training, and business continuity


The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking a strategic and experienced professional with a post-secondary degree in Urban/Rural Planning or a related discipline. Our ideal candidate has a minimum of five (5) years of experience in professional municipal planning, including leading complex policy projects and interpreting provincial land use legislation.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated leadership and project management abilities, strong knowledge of the Ontario Planning Act, and experience preparing and reviewing official plan policies (e.g., secondary plans and area-specific plans). We are seeking an individual with superior analytical, communication, and negotiation skills, a demonstrated ability to work independently and in teams, and a high level of professionalism and political acuity. Experience implementing aggregate resources policies would be an asset.

The successful candidate for Senior Planner, Policy will be required to work a flexible schedule, including in the office, remotely, and after hours (as required).

This position offers an hourly salary range of $63.25 to $79.06 plus a competitive benefit package.
