The College of Engineering at Texas A&M University invites applications for a full-time tenured Professor and Department Head for the Zachry Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The projected start date will be Spring 2026 with an appointment term of 11-months. The candidate must be an innovative and visionary leader with excellent communication skills and a clear commitment to collaborative practices. They should demonstrate a strong record of accomplishments in research, academic or industry leadership, teaching, and scholarship. The successful candidate will guide one of the nation's top engineering programs and will be expected to recruit, retain, and lead outstanding faculty, further advancing the department's research and educational excellence.
The Zachry Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Texas A&M University serves the state, national, and global community by educating and empowering future leaders to address the complex challenges of infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, and societal resilience. We are among the largest and most comprehensive programs in the United States, with a current enrollment of approximately 898 undergraduate and over 379 graduate students. Our undergraduate and graduate programs are consistently ranked among the top in the nation (e.g., U.S. News & World Report). The 50 tenured and tenure-track and over 24 academic-track faculty members in the department are internationally recognized for their groundbreaking research, innovative education, and impactful service. Our faculty's expertise spans a wide range of critical areas, including structural engineering, infrastructure materials engineering, transportation engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, coastal engineering, environmental engineering, and construction engineering and management. We are actively engaged in interdisciplinary research in various areas, such as Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Automation in Civil Infrastructure, Future Cities, and Sustainable and Resilient Natural and Built Environments, to tackle grand challenges such as weather extremes, sustainable infrastructure, construction automation, and resilient communities. Our world-class research facilities include state-of-the-art laboratories for materials testing, environmental analysis, hydraulics, and geotechnical investigations. These facilities provide our students with unparalleled hands-on learning experiences and enable cutting-edge research.
The faculty, staff, and students within the department foster a collaborative and supportive environment, promoting innovation and discovery. The department offers B.S. degrees in civil engineering and environmental engineering, and M.S., M.Eng., and Ph.D. in civil engineering, as well as specialized graduate programs. The vast majority of our PhD students are supported through research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and prestigious fellowships. Our undergraduate programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET).

Qualifications
Applicants must have an earned doctorate in civil and environmental engineering or a closely related engineering or science discipline. Candidates should possess proven leadership and administrative skills and an established national reputation as a leader and a scholar consistent with an appointment to the rank of professor of civil and environmental engineering with tenure. Candidates should possess a proven record of successful management and leadership of externally funded projects, and they are expected to have excellent interpersonal skills. To ensure a candidate's ability to understand and effectively perform the duties expected of the department head, candidates are expected to have an established track record of leadership in academic organizations or in organizations with close ties to academic institutions.

- Providing leadership of the faculty, staff, and students to define and achieve departmental goals.
- Managing the department's staff, faculty, and finances.
- Serving as liaison for the department to the College of Engineering and the Texas A&M University System.
- Representing the department to state and federal agencies, private organizations, partners and collaborators, key industry groups, and the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department Heads Organization.
- Promoting the research and educational opportunities associated with the department to other civil and environmental engineering departments and other universities.
- Providing leadership for continuing acquisition of internal and external resources for the department.
- Leading the development of the department's strategic plan with input from key stakeholders.
- Engaging with donors, former students, and other stakeholders.
