MISSION OF THE POSITION
The Flight Software Subsystem (IPT) Lead is responsible for overseeing the entire product lifecycle of the Flight Software for Starlab, from initial design and development through to delivery verification. This role will provide technical expertise to cross-functional teams, ensuring that the Flight Software meets all requirements ensuring successful implementation and deployment. This position also involves determining technical objectives, representing the organization as a prime technical contact, and guiding the development and implementation of engineering solutions to ensure compliance and safety.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Product Lifecycle Management and Integration
Responsible for the overall product lifecycle for Flight Software, including architecture, design, development, and verification for Starlab. Develops and oversees the implementation of software engineering solutions, including planning, deployment, resource allocation, testing, documentation, integration, and compliance and safety. Liaise with all levels of program and engineering staff on software design, integration and test matters and support other teams/disciplines as necessary. Support program design and readiness reviews as Flight Software lead. Communicates Flight Software development status and generates relevant metrics to monitor development progress. Coordinate efforts to integrate flight software components for testing and verification in Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation environments.
Technical Problem Solving
Defines technical objectives for solutions addressing complex software engineering challenges. Represents the organization as a prime technical contact for Flight Software.
Development Planning and Scheduling
Formulate and maintain Flight Software development plans and schedule inputs as execution occurs. Develop Basis of Estimates for assigned program tasks and proposals. Provide schedule status, estimate to complete (ETC), and variance inputs to cost account managers. Plans and coordinates the maintenance of software engineering solutions, including documentation, reporting, publishing, and create technical/ other presentations, to ensure the solutions continued viability in an evolving environment. Develop software requirements and architecture in coordination with systems engineering and subsystem owners.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
May function in an advisory or leadership role for a project/program and provide direction and guidance to professional staff. Define, implement, and teach software development best practices. Perform additional duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead the cross functional team to define the Flight Software scope by providing programmatic leadership and collaborating with the resource owners and other functional organizations to manage the IPT workload. Lead a flight software development team for Starlab.

COMPETENCIES
EDUCATION
- Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in engineering or a related technical field from an accredited institution.
- Equivalent engineering experience may be considered in place of a degree.
CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES
- No certification or licenses required.
EXPERIENCE
- 12+ years of progressive engineering experience with a bachelor's degree.
- 10+ years of progressive engineering experience with a master's degree.
- 7+ years of progressive engineering experience with a PhD.
- 6+ years of embedded software development and testing experience including multi-threaded programming and real-time systems.
- Must have at least 6 years of spacecraft or space system design experience.
- Must have at least 3 years of experience in leading technical teams.
- Experience with Core Flight Software (cFS).
- Demonstrate systems engineering experience in the entire lifecycle.
- Experience developing a Real Time Operating System (VxWorks preferred).
- Experience providing technical leadership for the Flight Software Subsystem.
- Experience preparing for and presenting at customer reviews.
- Experience in risk management, earned value management, configuration management, and requirements management.
- Experience in schedule development using Microsoft project.
- Experience using Solidworks or other 3D computer aided design software.
