As the AVP, you will be responsible for managing and overseeing all aspects of licensing, regulatory compliance, and commission for Nationwide Financial (NF). Your expertise in licensing requirements, regulations, and commission structures will be crucial in ensuring the smooth and compliant operation of our business.

You will lead a dynamic team responsible for supporting Retirement Solutions, Corporate Solutions, Annuity Operations, and Life Operations. You'll need to be a strategic and visionary leader to drive engagement, foster a positive culture, and ensure operational excellence through innovative thinking and process improvement.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic direction and governance of the end-to-end licensing and commission processes and experiences. Set clear goals and objectives aligned with the company's strategic direction.


  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of licensing, appointment, and training requirements for financial services professionals, including brokers, agents, and advisors.


  • Oversee the licensing appointment process, including initial applications, financial professional screening and due diligence, appointment renewals, and updates, ensuring compliance with regulatory bodies and industry standards.


  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure timely completion of licensing and training requirements and maintain accurate records.


  • Oversee the administration and execution of NF selling agreements with external sales distribution partners.


  • Stay up-to-date with financial services regulations, laws, and industry best practices, and ensure adherence to them. Participate in professional and/or industry associate meeting, seminars and continuing education programs. Develop and implement policies, procedures, and controls to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements. Build business acumen by gaining a clear understanding of the industry, market trends, and competitive landscape. Apply this knowledge to drive strategic alignment and business growth.


  • Conduct regular audits and reviews to identify potential compliance issues and implement corrective actions as needed.


  • Oversee the maintenance of commission structures for financial services professionals; ensure accurate and timely calculation and payment of commissions.


  • Regularly review and analyze commission plans to identify areas for improvement and ensure alignment with business objectives.


  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, such as legal, compliance, technology, and HR departments, to ensure coordination and alignment of licensing and commission activities.


  • Develop and nurture a culture that embodies the 5 Cs: creativity, community, collaboration, connection, and celebration. Drive engagement and foster a positive work environment.


  • Demonstrate high emotional intelligence in interactions with team members, stakeholders, and business partners. Build strong relationships and maintain a supportive atmosphere.


  • Utilize Lean Six Sigma methodologies to continuously evaluate and improve the operating model, focusing on people, processes, and technology.


  • Drive process excellence and innovative thinking.


  • Lead transformational efforts in partnership with Shared Services and Technology teams to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.


  • Stay abreast of technological advancements and leverage technology to optimize operations and drive innovation.


May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to VP, Internal Sales & Service.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies in accounting, business, finance, law or a related field.

License/Certification/Designation: Preferred licenses include one of the following, Operations Principal (Series 99), Limited Purpose RR and Principal (Series 6 and 26), OR General Securities RR and Principal (Series 7 and 24).

Experience: 10 or more years of experience in financial services operations, including leadership experience preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Deep understanding of regulatory requirements and industry best practices. Strong knowledge of financial products, services, and industry regulations (e.g., SEC, FINRA, state insurance departments). Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop a high-performing team. Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities. Attention to detail and organizational skills. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
