Position Summary
The Accounting Associate (Assistant Director) will be responsible for a higher-level portfolio of units within the department. They will assist in facilitating the daily business, accounting, and budgeting activities for assigned units. Responsible for identifying, analyzing, and reporting administrative and operational inconsistencies. As well as reviewing program policy and maintaining effective internal and external communication channels; research regulatory compliance policies and apply discretionary judgement in the coordination and follow-through of all aspects of the Student Affairs Financial Services department.
Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to; financial analysis, planning, and reporting, budgeting, accounts payable and receivable handling, reconciliations, preparing various management reports and posting general ledger entries for various units. Perform skilled financial and budgetary analysis of operating and general ledger transactions of all types (purchasing, payables, accounts receivable, payroll, billing, inventory, etc.). Provide detailed analysis, informational summaries, comprehensive reports to support the leadership of assigned units. Prepare annual budgets in coordination with the leadership of assigned units. Responsible for the monthly financial close while monitoring variances between Actual versus Budget and making necessary accrual, deferral, and correcting general ledger entries. Monitor State, Self-Supporting and ICR funds to assist the financial operations and strategic planning efforts. Responsible for Grant and Sponsored projects management and accounting. Apply advanced accounting methods for certain ad-hoc projects for all units assigned. Interface with procurement, vendors, and unit directors concerning accounts receivable and vendor payment management. Lead the preparation of assigned units' mandatory requisites including all quarterly and annual reporting requirements. Respond to all internal and external audit inquiries for assigned units. Perform a variety of functions that require the application of generally accepted accounting principles and practices in reviewing and analyzing accounting transactions in both BANNER (cash) and SAGE (accrual) accounting systems. Perform financial analysis and computations for financial models and pro forma reporting. Perform purchasing functions via iBuy and Chrome River as required. Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. A) Bachelor's degree with a major in Accountancy or a related field AND two (2) years of professional level accounting experience.
OR
B) Possession of current registration as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant, or a valid license to practice Public Accounting (LPA).
OR
C) Master's degree in Accountancy or a related field.

Minimum Qualifications:

OR

- 4-6 years of professional level accounting, managerial, and/or business experience, preferably in a large and complex university or not-for-profit setting.
- Knowledge of fund accounting, GASB and GAAP.
- Knowledge of the University of Illinois Chicago various applications, such as Banner finance module, SAP Business Objects, EDDIE, iBuy, Chromeriver, SAGE, FABweb, Finance Feeder Front-End, My-UI-Financials, and other related campus-based business/finance systems.
