Description:
NewsNation is looking for a Deputy Bureau Chief to serve as second in command of the network's Washington, DC Bureau. The Deputy Bureau Chief assists in day-to-day management of the bureau partnering with The Bureau Chief to provide oversight and supervision of correspondents, producers, photojournalists, assignment editors, desk assistants and other bureau staff. This role helps drive newsgathering by establishing processes and workflows which ensure proper staffing and resource allocation, encourages strong original reporting, and facilitates timely dissemination of editorial information to all platforms and partners. The ideal candidate is an editorially savvy, creative, collaborative, and decisive leader who is hands on and solution oriented. The role is based at the network's DC office.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Helps manage daily editorial and logistical coverage process for stories and events originating in DC and or related to political coverage
Assists in supervision of bureau assignment desk
Leads weekly bureau planning meeting
Communicates with network leaders on storylines, developments, and events of note
Outlines daily and next day reporter assignments
Provides editorial and standards guidance and support for correspondents and producers
Liaises with network leadership in Chicago and NYC, and with show leadership
Maintains schedule for DC editorial staff and communicates changes
Provides feedback, mentoring and support ensuring employees are set up for success and able to meet network goals
Collaborates with leaders at The Hill and in Nexstar's DC Bureau assuring constructive collaboration and integration
Helps drive efficiency and innovation making sure DC bureau provide best in class and distinctive DC coverage and that the bureau always seeks to be more effective and more efficient
Serves as DC Bureau Chief in bureau chief's absence
Performs other duties as assignment by the Bureau Chief or network leadership
Qualifications & Requirements:
College degree or equivalent related experience
Ten or more years of experience covering Washington, DC and national politics for a television network or outlet
An in-depth knowledge of the institutions and workings of Washington DC is a must
Familiarity with network pool structure and transmission lines a plus
Must be willing to work flexible shift/schedule during breaking news or special events coverage
Must exhibit strong news judgment
Must have strong organizational skills
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written are essential
Must be solution-oriented
Must be responsive to feedback
Must also be capable of interacting positively and productively with other employees all while understanding you are leading by example
Working knowledge of ENPS, Microsoft Teams
Salary Range: $130,000 - $150,000
