Description
The Kentucky Innocence Project (KIP), located in Frankfort within the Department of Public Advocacy's Post-Conviction Branch, has a position open for a Supervisor to oversee the unit. The KIP supervisor role is amulti-faceted position that involves managing law school externships at three Kentucky law schools, primaryteaching duties at one of the law schools, oversight of federal and state grants, an advisory role for the KIPInc. nonprofit, and policy work to advance criminal justice reform. The KIP Supervisor also oversees intakes,record reviews, investigations, case reviews and litigation.
DPA is one of the few state agencies that has an internally located innocence project whose program isintegrated into the public defender program. KIP is part of the national innocence network. The KIP teamlocates those inmates that have been wrongfully convicted and seeks exoneration through the development of newevidence and litigation. KIP has secured 20 exonerations since it was started.
Cases often include issues such as government misconduct or development of forensic evidence which was eitheroverlooked at trial or based on outdated and faulty science. If you find this kind of work exciting andinteresting, you should consider applying.

EDUCATION:See Special Requirements.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS:Must have four years experience as a licensed attorney in the practice of law.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE:A Master of Laws degree (LL.M.) will substitute for one year of the required experience.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION:NONE
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.):Must be admitted to practice law and in good standing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky OR comply with Kentucky Supreme Court Rule (SCR) 2.111 (limited certification of admission to practice), SCR 2.112 (attorney participants in defender or legal services programs), SCR 2.117 (practice pending admission). Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Duties are performed primarily in both office and courtroom settings. Travel is required.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.

- An ability to communicate with and coach staff, assess cases, and coordinate programs;
- A desire to write federal grants and manage federal programs. Experience with federal grant work is desired,but not required;
- A willingness to manage the statewide externship program and be the primary instructor at one law school; havegood presentation skills suitable for teaching classes and the desire to work with law school students;
- An interest in policy work and criminal justice reform work;
- A clear commitment to the future of the Kentucky Innocence Project as a prominent part of the services offeredby the DPA.
- Experience with innocence cases is a plus.
- Provides legal services to clients with innocence claims and ensures awareness of KIP program in all KY stateprisons.
- Provides oversight of externship program and legal education for students
- Provides oversight of data collection and JustWare usage. Manages federal and state grants.
- Considers all manners of relief for clients and collaborates with other attorneys to obtain this relief.
- Provides supervision of staff, case assignments and oversight of litigation.
- Evaluates Proposed polices.
- Travel is required.
