The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Deputy Director of Content Strategy to work at the center of our audience-first mission.
You will help steer a team in developing content strategy for a newsroom focused on creating distinctive journalism that engages subscribers and attracts new audiences. You'll serve as both a catalyst for cultural transformation-fostering new ways of thinking and doing things-and a translator of actionable insights to infuse audience-first thinking into coverage.
In our fast-paced, global newsroom, you'll balance rapid recommendations during breaking news with long-term strategic initiatives that reinforce the Journal's position as the definitive source for business-minded audiences. The ideal candidate is an exceptional communicator and creative thinker-endlessly curious about evolving audience needs and adept at pairing sound news judgment with data-driven rigor.

Pay Range: $140,000 - $170,000

This role is based in New York and reports to the Director of Content Strategy.
You will:
- Support the Director of Content Strategy in establishing priorities for the team and ensuring we act with urgency to deliver impact in the newsroom.
- Lead and mentor a high-performing team of audience strategists and editors.
- Cultivate a culture of experimentation, data-driven decision-making and cross-functional collaboration, including coverage, audience development, operations, product and marketing.
- Translate newsroom priorities into clear, measurable content strategies.
- Champion analytics across the newsroom and turn audience data into actionable insights.
- Present to senior leaders and share learnings broadly to inform coverage.
- Launch and shepherd deep-dive content analyses that shape and plan coverage, and answer strategic questions about and beyond coverage.
- Anticipate emerging news trends and innovate story formats-text, live blogs, visuals, video, podcasts and other mediums-to maximize impact and keep our coverage ahead of the curve.
- Relentlessly advocate for the needs of our audiences.
You have:
- 10+ years of experience in digital newsrooms with expertise in editorial strategy and some combination of audience development, analytics, reporting and editing, video and audio, production, or project management.
- Proven ability to lead teams that achieve substantial audience growth and boost subscriber engagement.
- Exceptional analytical skills-adept at extracting insights from data, crafting clear narratives for news leaders, and recommending actionable solutions.
- Expertise with web analytics tools; SQL, Python, or other data-analysis languages are a plus.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with a talent for influencing senior stakeholders and driving cross-departmental alignment.
- Demonstrated success in building trust, collaborating effectively, and forging consensus across teams.
- Deep understanding of and passion for the competitive digital-news media landscape.
- Self-starter comfortable identifying challenges and opportunities, with the drive to develop and implement solutions.
