Mission or Goal of Unit:

The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry is located in downtown Richmond, Virginia. With a 132-year history, Virginia's only dental school provides opportunities for selected, qualified individuals to study dentistry and oral health through a doctor of dental surgery (D.D.S) program, graduate specialty training programs and a dental hygiene program. The VCU School of Dentistry is one of a small number of dental schools in the country affiliated with an academic medical center, the only dental school in the Commonwealth, and the second oldest dental school in the U.S. It is one of five health sciences academic programs on the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus of VCU.

Chief Purpose of this position:

The School of Dentistry's Department of General Practice; is seeking applicants for a full-time faculty position in the Division of Prosthodontics. Responsibilities include didactic and clinical teaching in fixed, removable, and implant prosthodontics to dental students and residents; participation in service activities and research.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching:
Responsibilities include clinical and didactic teaching of pre-doctoral students and residents, in fixed, removable, and implant prosthodontics as well as mentoring undergraduate dental students and residents in preparation for private practice, service, and scholarship. Leadership as a course director at the pre-doctoral level is also required. All faculty members are expected to teach in an integrated curriculum system. Teaching across traditional departmental lines and in multidisciplinary teams is required. Faculty members are expected to foster transformative learning that is informed by interdisciplinary and translational research, scholarship, and creative expression.

Clinical:
Faculty will supervise care in predoctoral and graduate clinics, working collaboratively with other faculty and staff to promote best practices, and improve clinic productivity. Participation in the Faculty Private Practice is optional; but requires a demonstrated ability to build a practice.

Research:
Faculty members will participate in research and will work collaboratively with dental research programs and investigators.

Service:
Faculty member will be expected to serve the Department of General Practice, Division of Prosthodontics in the School of Dentistry, and committees and task forces as requested. In addition, participation in dentistry-related community service activities is strongly encouraged.

Required Qualifications:
DDS or DMD from an ADA accredited dental school
Certificate or advanced degree in Prosthodontics from an ADA accredited program
Eligible for a dental license in Virginia
Ability to teach and mentor pre-doctoral dental students and residents in the practice of clinical dentistry
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Demonstrated ability to contribute to and participate in a humanistic environment of learning with the ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technology
For tenure eligible positions at the Assistant Professor rank, an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, as well as potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department
For tenure eligible positions at the Associate or Professor rank, a well-develop scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise in the department

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience teaching pre-doctoral students and residents in all aspects of Prosthodontics
Board certification in Prosthodontics
