Role Overview
McElhanney is excited to add a Transportation Engineer to our team. We're looking for a transportation engineer who's curious, analytical, and comfortable working with data to solve real-world mobility challenges. In this role, you'll contribute to a variety of transportation projects across Western Canada, supporting everything from traffic studies to long-range planning and design.
You'll work with clients and multidisciplinary teams to understand issues, build models, and develop recommendations that lead to practical, well-informed decisions. You should be comfortable turning complex information into clear, easy-to-understand summaries for both technical and non-technical audiences.

The salary range for this position is $92,000 - $137,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual's education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. Responsibilities
- Contribute to a range of transportation planning and engineering projects, from early-stage proposals through to final delivery and implementation
- Conduct data analysis using a variety of sources, including traffic counts, turning movement data, and regional datasets, to support traffic impact assessments, corridor studies, and operational reviews
- Build and analyze traffic models using software such as Synchro, SimTraffic, Vistro, and HCS. Experience with macro-modelling tools (like VISSIM, VISUM, or EMME) is considered a strong asset
- Document technical work clearly and consistently, ensuring assumptions, methodologies, and results are well-communicated and easy to reference
- Support automation of data workflows where possible, using tools like Python, Power Query, and Excel to streamline repetitive tasks and improve efficiency
- Prepare technical memos, reports, and presentations that clearly communicate findings to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams across offices and provide input that supports the planning, design, and decision-making processes of various transportation projects
- Stay current with industry trends, municipal and provincial guidelines, and best practices in transportation planning and traffic engineering
Qualifications
- Minimum 8 years of experience in transportation engineering, operations, or planning
- Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field. P.Eng designation (or eligibility) is preferred
- Strong background in traffic analysis, including experience with Synchro, SimTraffic, Vistro, and HCS. Experience with VISSIM, VISUM, or EMME is an asset
- Comfortable working with datasets in tools like Python, Power BI, or Excel, with experience using Power Query and VBA to manage, clean, and analyze data
- Familiarity with planning and design standards from Alberta Transportation, the City of Calgary, and the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC)
- Able to manage multiple tasks and priorities, while maintaining attention to detail and meeting deadlines
- Valid (or in progress) Class 5 driver's license
