Job Duties
VDOT is seeking a Work Zone Safety Program Supervisor to join our Central Office Traffic Operations Division located in Richmond, Virginia. This individual will supervise staff and assist in managing VDOT's Statewide Work Zone Safety Program. Oversee the broad development of highway safety policies, standards, and guidelines. Manage special initiatives related to VDOT's adoption and implementation of new and emerging work zone technologies. Implement the Department's policy on the FHWA Final Rule for Work Zone Safety and Mobility. Provide expert technical work zone safety guidance to both internal and external customers. Assist in managing the Work Zone Safety Section with statewide oversight of work zone activities including the planning, development and coordination of staff and work zone safety programs, training strategies and programs, special transportation studies, and distribution of work zone safety information and material.
Additional responsibilities may include but are not limited to providing district support, developing and interpreting work zone safety special initiatives, training and educating, and developing work zone safety standards and policies.

Minimum Qualifications
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences and to make presentations and conduct meetings.
Ability to develop policies, procedures, and narratives.
Ability to supervise staff, provide leadership, train and direct the work of others.
Skill in designing and inspecting work zones in common road types and environments while applying national work zone standards and best practices.
Ability to obtain and maintain Basic Work Zone Traffic Control certification or higher and Flagger certification.
Knowledge of laws, rules, regulations, policies, standards, and procedures as they relate to highway safety.
Skill in managing complex initiatives involving a combination of traffic safety, construction, and technology considerations.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments.
Additional Considerations
A combination of training, experience, or education in engineering, information technology, business, work zone safety or related field desired.
Possession of Flagger certification.
Technical work zone evaluation skills.
Experience in traffic work zone safety, highway construction, maintenance and public speaking.
Possession of Traffic Control Supervisor, Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety or Traffic Control Design Specialist certifications.
