Your Opportunity:
Reporting to the Pathology Assistant II, MLT II, Supervisor or Manager, this position aids Pathologists in performing gross tissue examination. Gross Examination and Sampling of Surgical Specimens:Prepare and perform gross surgical non-complex specimen dissection according to standard operating procedures (SOPs) up to and including level IV and additional specimen types as trained.Confirm pertinent and appropriate clinical information.Operate, maintain and perform basic troubleshooting of all instruments, equipment and procedures including the imaging and mapping of tissue specimens.Ensures annual competencies are completed within specified timelines.Provides instruction and collects specimens ensuring sample integrity.Performs all quality control and assurance practices and maintains records as required.Monitors department supply inventory and acts appropriately to maintain.Responds appropriately to non-conforming events and unusual situations. Identifies when to refer more complex issues or problems to the immediate Supervisor. Contributes to operational improvements.Collaborates on the preparation of manuals and SOP.Maintains, cleans, decontaminates and organizes work areas based on LEAN Six Sigma principles and SOPs.Maintains awareness and consistently practices all safety precautions and procedures including WHMIS.Enters information into the Laboratory Information System and tracking system.Files, retrieves and discards specimens/blocks /slides with a high degree of accuracy.Participates in the training and orientation of students and staff and evaluates their progress.Embedding and microtomy tasksPerforms other related duties.
Description:
As a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) I, you will be responsible for the daily processing, testing, results analysis and reporting of diagnostic samples within the laboratory department. You will perform a variety of routine and specialized procedures in the processing of specimens used in diagnosis, treatment and research.
Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program.Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).
Additional Required Qualifications:
Able to work with exposure to chemicals and gloves. Chemicals may include but not limited to formalin, xylene, bleach. Any Canadian equivalency to English 30 or 33 or CLBA score of Benchmark 8 completed within the last 6 months.Anatomic Pathology experience within the past 10 years; experience within the last 2 years preferred.Physical effort requiring manual dexterity is required (i.e. more than 75% of time on the job.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience grossing up to level IV, experience within the last 2 years preferred.Basic LIS and Microsoft computer skills.
