The Pit Technologies (PT) Division, part of the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP), is instrumental in delivering top-quality plutonium pit-related products and services. This division focuses on maintaining and enhancing the performance of nuclear components while following rigorous compliance and safety protocols. As a member of the PT-2 Machining Group within the PT Division, you will engage in complex machining and processing tasks, apply your engineering expertise, and mentor early-career employees in their professional development.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

As an Engineering Technologist 1 at our nuclear facility, you will report to a First Line Manager (Manufacturing Manager 1). Your responsibilities include:
  • Uses professional concepts and Laboratory objectives to resolve moderately complex issues in creative and effective ways.
  • Frequently contributes to the development of new methods and approaches.
  • Applies basic knowledge of the principles of engineering, mathematics, and science, to solve routine technical problems.
  • Assists engineering staff to prepare and/or carry out changes in design, methods of manufacture/assembly, and drafting techniques/procedures; coordinate corrective actions.
  • May provide direction to technicans. Understand material and material properties.
  • Evaluate problems post inspection; tooling and fixturing.
  • Understand CNC machine capabilities.
  • Understand and able to utilize a variety of CNC machines such as Haas, Mazak, Moore, Precitech, and DMU.
  • Working knowledge in machining applications and operations.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematical formulas and computations and data gathering methods.
  • Working knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering principles and basic technical responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of relevant procedures, standards, and guides.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.
  • CNC Machine programming.
  • Coordinate, assign, and outsource work, identify, and procure tooling as required .
  • Basic knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, and design.

Education: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous work in a nuclear facility is preferred.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge associated with facilities and production processes related to manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of commercial databases, such as PDMLink and SharePoint.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD/CAM modeling and design, such as ProEngineer/Creo.

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status .
