About The Outer Banks Hospital

The Outer Banks Hospital (OBH) is a full-service critical access hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. The 21-bed facility is designed to meet the needs of the coastal community, whose year-round population of approximately 35,000 swells to about 350,000 in the summer season. Its campus includes four ORs, a medical/surgical unit, a labor & delivery suite with a dedicated caesarian section OR, a full rehabilitation therapy center, cancer treatment and radiation therapy center, and a 24-hour emergency department.

Position Summary

The Director of Clinical Laboratory Services has responsibility of directing, coordinating and supervising all department staff and operations in the laboratory. As the Director, you will collaborate with the leadership and laboratory services of the Outer Banks Medical Group as well as collaborating with colleagues at ECU Health and Chesapeake Health Authority, assuring communication of activities and utilizing resources as appropriate. Utilizing participative leadership skills, the Director maintains responsibility for the coordination of operations in a manner, which is consistent with organizational goals, vision and mission. The Director actively participates in the organization's leadership functions and collaborates with other organization leaders in designing and providing services.

As the Director of Clinical Laboratory Services, other responsibilities includes:
  • Providing effective leadership to the Laboratory department.
  • Develop, revise, and implementing policy and procedures for the laboratory department. Utilizing effective critical thinking skills in the decision making process.
  • Possess and applies up to date knowledge of regulatory guidelines, ensuring compliance with the guidelines.
  • Provide effective customer service skills with all customers: internal, external, patients and physicians.
  • Responsible for budget development and operational efficiency.
  • Responsible for implementing, monitoring, and evaluating established goals for the department.
  • Formulates departmental goals consistent with the hospital's Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Excels at developing and empowering the staff.
  • Responsible for hiring the right staff and completing Performance Appraisals.

Minimum Requirements

Must possess a B.S. degree in Medical Technology or related field and be ASCP registered. Strong preference for a Master's degree- or higher.

Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in a hospital setting. Should draw on knowledge and research from the following areas: organizational behavior; management systems and processes; clinical practice guidelines; law, regulation, and ethics; health care economics; health and public policy; trends in healthcare business
practices; consumer health care issues; health care evaluation and outcome measures; fiscal management and finance.

Other Information
  • 40 hours per week
  • Monday - Friday (8 am - 5 pm)
  • Must be flexible with shift hours including working nights, weekends, and on-call, when needed
