The Data, Research and Development unit within the Division of Operations Planning provides insights into subway and bus ridership and performance by monitoring, analyzing modeling, forecasting and reporting key indicators. Our algorithms and analyses support the work of planners, schedulers, and leadership across NYCT to inform all scales of planning for New York City's transit system, from daily schedules, temporary service diversions, bus network redesigns to long-term capital needs. DRD projects include developing in-house ridership models utilizing transportation software such as Trans CAD to forecast ridership under different service and land use scenarios, projecting run times for proposed bus routes, recommending service levels for shuttle buses, assessing equity impacts, and developing processes, reports and visualizations to effectively share these insights. Our work also includes exploring newly available ridership and performance data sources to develop new data pipelines and improve existing analytical tools. The group submits reports to the FTA's National Transit Database and manages NYCT's involvement in benchmarking organizations to compare our performance and exchange information and potential innovations on a broad range of relevant topics with peer transit agencies around the world.
Responsibilities
This position may include updating processes for modeling and measuring ridership, updating passenger-perspective performance metrics calculation, exploring new data collection technologies, and developing algorithms that integrate multiple data sources to produce actionable insights, validating new datasets, or designing visualizations for internal and external use. These projects may involve data sources such as Automated Fare Card (AFC) records, Automated Passenger Counts (APC), anonymized mobile device data as well as bus and subway movement data.
