The Senior Associate, Environmental, will report to the Senior Director of Environmental Programs and ensure that RWE Clean Energy (RWECE) maintains compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations, and requirements. The Senior Associate will also support the development of the Company's environmental initiatives across the full lifecycle of RWECE, from development through decommissioning.

Pay range: The annual base salary range for this position in Illinois is $85,000 - $130,000. The listed salary range represents our good faith estimate for this position and represents the range for new hire salaries across all U.S locations. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. RWE considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's education & work experience, training & certifications, and key skills as well as market and business considerations at the time of the offer.

The Senior Associate, Environmental, will report to the Senior Director of Environmental Programs and ensure that RWE Clean Energy (RWECE) maintains compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations, and requirements. The Senior Associate will also support the development of the Company's environmental initiatives across the full lifecycle of RWECE, from development through decommissioning.
Role Responsibilities:
- Support the development and implementation of RWECE's Environmental Management System (EMS) in accordance with industry standards (e.g., ISO 14001) and best practices. This includes the creation of program documents, training of employees and managers on created programs, and responding to questions regarding the implementation of developed programs
- Provide technical expertise in any of several areas of environmental practice, as needed. Areas of environmental practice include Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), Environmental Assessments (EA) (i.e., NEPA, state-level environmental review regulations, etc.), native plants and habitats, including biological assessments and evaluations of such, Threatened and/or endangered species issues and take permits (i.e., BGEPA, ESA, MBTA, etc.), Water and stormwater management for construction and operations (i.e., CWA, SWPPPs, etc.), Chemical management, including spill prevention and control (i.e., EPCRA, SPCC, etc.), and Waste management (i.e., RCRA). The SA will be called upon to respond to queries from both internal and external stakeholders. This position will support the West region, including the following states: CA, OR, WA, ID, NV, UT, WY, AZ, NM
- The SA will interface with various departments and organizations throughout RWECE, including development, construction, and operations regarding environmental matters as specific team members on projects or as an adjunct team member for providing oversight and guidance. The SA will need to attend meetings and provide written and oral responses to environmental matters on behalf of the department and in accordance with applicable regulatory framework and company policy.
- In addition to internal meetings regarding project or operational environmental matters, the SA will be required to participate in meetings with state and federal resource agencies both in person and virtually. Meeting attendance will be required to facilitate and/or manage issues and the execution of tasks regarding compliance with regulatory matters
- Participate in industry groups focused on environmental/wildlife issues and report activities to the larger team. Meeting attendance both in person and virtually can range from weekly to monthly, including in-person multiple-day events. Providing feedback to the organization on behalf of RWECE as well as being a conduit for information back to RWECE will be one of the responsibilities of the SA
Job Requirements and Experience:
- Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science, biology, civil/environmental engineering, or related degree
- A minimum of 5 years of experience developing and implementing environmental programs, including environmental permitting, in the Energy Industry, with a preferred renewable energy focus
- Experience in Construction and or Operations, including fieldwork
- Experience with environmental compliance matters associated with wildlife issues as directed by USFWS and state wildlife agencies
- Experience with environmental compliance matters associated with the following regulatory programs: EPCRA, SPCC, RCRA, CAA, etc.
- Experience with environmental compliance matters in the following states: CA, OR, WA, ID, NV, UT, WY, AZ, NM
- Experience in building relationships with internal and external customers/stakeholders based on a partnership style
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage customer relationships
- Demonstrated desire to learn about the Company and the renewables space
- Excellent proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Teams
- Strong leadership and communication, and ability to meet deadlines
- Strong organization skills and ability to coordinate multiple tasks and deliverables
- Ability to multi-task while working independently and as part of a team
- Motivated self-starter, goal-oriented, and strong problem-solving abilities
- Proven ability to empathize, build relationships, and effectively communicate with people from a diverse set of backgrounds
- Responds well to direction, is easy to challenge and develop, and is coachable
- Is detail-oriented, has strong business acumen, and a sound understanding of business concepts
