About the position:

The mission of the Americares Free Clinics is to provide quality health care to low-income, uninsured patients in a setting where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect. Americares opened its first clinic in 1994 to expand access to care for the working poor. Over the years, our program has grown to become the largest free clinic network in the state with four locations serving 2,000 patients annually. Today, our clinics in Bridgeport, Danbury, Norwalk and Stamford are the primary source of free medical care for the uninsured in Fairfield County.

The Clinic Nurse will assist the clinic staff with all operations of clinic sessions. In the absence of the Clinic Director, the Clinic Nurse will oversee the administrative, organizational and clinical operations. In addition, the Clinic Nurse will assist the Clinic Director and the with special projects, administration, and other activities.

Key Outcomes:

In the first 90 days, the Clinic Nurse will:
  • Learn and live the Americares values.
  • Complete all required new hire onboarding trainings.
  • Understand the mission and vision of Americares Free Clinics.
  • Demonstrate a full understanding of the clinic flow and daily activities.
  • Demonstrate the ability to independently handle a daily patient assignment under the direction of 2 Providers.
  • Demonstrate the ability to independently document all care in the electronic health record professionally and accurately.

In the first 6 months, the Clinic Nurse will:
  • Demonstrate ability to triage patients (in person and phone) to determine the appropriate location of care.
  • Demonstrate understanding of overall clinic functioning including all aspects of patient care, referrals, medication management, documentation in the EHR, and patient education.
  • Demonstrate the ability and initiative to handle situations independently without the direction of the Clinic Director.
  • Work closely with all members of the healthcare team to have a seamless daily flow in clinic operations.

In the first year, the Clinic Nurse will:
  • Independently care for patient assignment
  • Complete special projects assigned by the Clinic Director
  • Participate in Quality Improvement
  • Provide full coverage of the Clinic Director for vacations
  • Provide supervision to Medical Assistants
  • Be an EHR superuser and the ability to troubleshoot issues

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Actively model and contribute to Americares values, work culture and mission.

  • Participate as team member of medical team in all aspects of clinic operations.
  • Oversee the efficient and effective functioning of the Clinic on a day-to-day basis.
  • Demonstrate nursing skills in patient assessment, taking patient history, triaging patients, onsite POCT, administering vaccinations, minor treatments under the direction of the clinic provider (neb treatments, ear irrigation) providing patient education and medication instructions.
  • Support the nursing and MA staff in relation to tests performed, referrals to be made, charting systems and other procedural decisions.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Degrees and/or experience required for the role:
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in nursing
  • Active CT Registered Nurse license
  • 1 year of experience working with adults with chronic medical problems

These competencies are required for the role:
  • Professional fluency in Spanish
  • Excellent clinical skills and judgement
  • Proven ability to work both as a team and individually, demonstrating initiative and accountability
  • Demonstrated ability to work with vulnerable and/or uninsured populations
  • Excellent communication skills with a diverse range of individuals, including patients, clinical staff and volunteers
  • Demonstrated ability in overseeing the compliance of clinic policies and procedures

US work authorization is required for this role.
