Position Overview
This position is accountable for interpreting policies and procedures governing geometric design, capacity and access control of highways for the design of intersections, interchanges, rest areas and weigh stations. This position is also responsible for the analysis of crash data and the development and submittal of the annual safety program under the direction of the Geometrics Engineer. This position is also responsible for the direction of route location and design studies during peak workloads. Design, review, and preparation of intersection designs for approval by the Geometrics Engineer and crash analysis/submittal of the annual safety program are performed by this position.
Essential Functions
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering, construction management, and/or transportation engineering PLUS five years of engineering experience; OR Seven years of engineering experience
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of computer applications such as MicroStation, Geopak and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Thorough knowledge of civil engineering as it applies to design, construction, and maintenance of highways
Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with departmental and industry staff
Strong oral and/or written communication skills

- Develops alternatives and review geometric designs in the district's program prior to the public involvement process.
- Reviews geometric designs involving state highways prepared by consultants, other district bureaus, and local agencies.
- Prepares and submits safety projects to the Bureau of Safety Engineering for inclusion into the district's program.
- Prepares/reviews geometric revisions during development of project plans and/or after construction contracts have been awarded.
- Presents designs to the public and local agencies.
- Trains, motivates, and evaluates subordinate personnel.
- Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
