Senior Data Analyst - Customer Operations, EPCOR Water Services

EPCOR Water Services (EWS) is seeking a full-time, permanent Senior Data Analyst to join our Customer Operations team at EPCOR Tower in downtown Edmonton, AB.

As a Senior Data Analyst, you will play a key role in advancing analytical initiatives and harnessing data for strategic decision-making across EWS. Leveraging your extensive technical expertise, you will lead cross-departmental projects, collaborate with business users, and drive solutions for complex business challenges.

Your responsibilities will include identifying and sourcing relevant data to support operational needs, developing robust data pipelines to ensure efficient data flow, performing data wrangling to refine and structure datasets, and designing and implementing dimensional models to meet warehousing requirements.

What you'd be responsible for

You are accountable to the Manager, Data Architecture and will have the following key accountabilities (but are not limited to these):

  • Providing insights to shape the EWS data landscape, influencing strategic decisions, optimizing pipelines, and ensuring a scalable data environment. Driving excellence in data collection, integration, storage, and governance while implementing best practices for integrity and compliance. Offering technical guidance through code reviews and QA/QC measures to uphold standards and ensure high-quality data products.
  • Delivering advanced technical expertise in the design, maintenance, and optimization of data engineering workflows. Enhancing query performance, refining ETL/ELT processes, and improving system efficiency to support business intelligence and analytics initiatives.
  • Developing and structuring complex data systems, building scalable, efficient, and resilient data pipelines capable of managing large data volumes. Ensuring the architecture is designed to support both current and evolving data requirements across the organization.

  • Implementing and executing strategies for capturing Slowly Changing Dimensions (SCD) within dimensional modeling to preserve historical data changes. Ensuring the data warehouse maintains an accurate and evolving record over time, enabling comprehensive trend analysis and insightful reporting.
  • Partnering with business stakeholders and cross-functional teams to gain insights into key challenges and ensure data solutions align with overall business objectives. Driving effective communication to support data initiatives that advance organizational goals.
  • Drawing from user requirements, translating data into compelling visual narratives that enhance accessibility and adhere to established standards. Leveraging data visualization to empower informed decision-making across the organization.
  • Leveraging advanced problem-solving and critical thinking to address complex system challenges and data inconsistencies. Developing strategic solutions that reinforce the stability and reliability of data systems.
  • Engaging with multiple functional areas within Water Services to collect, document, and address business requirements. Spearheading the deployment of Business Intelligence and Data Analytics tools to advance EWS's strategic goals, fostering innovation, and paving the way for a future-ready utility.


What's required to be successful

Qualifications, experience and behaviours you possess are:

  • Earned a four-year degree from a recognized educational institution in a relevant field such as Data Analytics, Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Business Technology Management, Computer Engineering/System Technology, or a related discipline.
  • 4+ years of experience, including:
    • Technical expertise in business intelligence and data analytics applications, with a focus on dashboard creation, exploratory data analysis, and managing ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes.
    • Leading and contributing to projects as a data analyst, business analyst, or data scientist within Business Intelligence and Data Analytics.
    • Practical experience in SQL scripting and querying relational databases.
    • Designing and implementing data warehousing solutions, including data modeling (3NF and dimensional models) and capturing Slowly Changing Dimensions (SCD).
    • Conducting exploratory data analysis, performing data cleaning and manipulation to extract valuable insights.
    • Developing solutions in an agile, dynamic, and fast-paced environment.
    • Effectively communicating data analysis findings with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven knowledge and skills in the following:
    • Data warehousing concepts and experience in implementing data models, OLAP Cubes.
    • Fundamentals of data analytics, data management, and relational database concepts.
  • Strong aptitude for problem solving, critical thinking and data analysis.


Additional assets that would be beneficial:

  • Experience in:
    • Public sector, utility sector, or other municipal industries.
    • Modern cloud-based data architecture.
    • Programming languages for data analysis, such as Python and Spark.
    • Spatial data, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications, or geospatial data manipulation tools.
    • Agile software development using Azure DevOps to manage backlogs, work boards, system artifacts, test suites, code repositories, and deploy changes via CI/CD pipelines.
  • Certifications:
    • Microsoft Certified Azure Data Engineer.
    • Databricks Certified Data Engineer.
    • IBM Certified Data Engineer.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Distributed computing and ETL processing with Spark.
    • Power BI or other data visualization tools.
    • Dimensional data modeling.

Wage: Starting at $50.95 per hour
  • Final Wage and Step will be determined at the time of selection and is based on a combination of factors as outlined in the CA that may be found online.

Hours of work: Monday to Friday (40 hours per week)
