The Senior Director Strategy, Incubation & Innovation is responsible for enabling the growth, relevance and success of the Science & Growth organization by leading and executing the key strategic priorities that are aligned to UL Solutions growth strategy. This position requires close collaboration with key stakeholders across the company to ensure the successful implementation of strategic initiatives and incubator start-ups which will contribute to the growth and success of the company. Additionally, the role is closely partnered with the Senior Vice President and Chief Scientist as well as the teams within the Science & Growth organization. Success in this role and unique opportunity will leave a large and positive legacy of growth and impact for UL Solutions, a 130 year leader in safety science.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and support the execution of key strategic priorities for Science & Growth that align with the company's goals and objectives. This includes leading and building the Long Range Planning process, coordinating closely with the Strategy leads from Testing, Inspection, & Certification (TIC),software & Advisory (S&A) and Strategic Support Functions to ensure alignment across UL Solutions; providing input into the strategic planning process, operationalize annual goals and objectives from strategic plan with leaders.
  • Enable the success of the Incubators by developing and implementing the strategic vision and goals for the incubators. This includes key areas of growth and innovation (Cyber, AI and Modeling Simulation).
  • Create and implement the framework for incubator startups to determine when they are ready to operate independently and succeed in the market. This includes establishing predefined milestones and criteria, assessing financial stability, market readiness, including early indicators of progress/success to reduce the instances of failure to improve outcomes; best practices and milestones for scaling.
  • Establish the ground work for a successful incubation program by conducting a feasibility study to help determine if the project has solid market, financial base to be successful.
  • Track the progress and performance of incubator start-ups. Use qualitative and quantitative data and metrics as well as feedback to continuously improve the incubation programs and services offered.
  • Provide support to the SVP & Chief Scientist as directed such as development and consolidation of Board materials, LRP, etc.
  • Responsible for stakeholder management (fostering relationships, establishing credibility) across program-specific Steering Committees, Operating Committee, senior leadership and other critical internal/external stakeholders and Board members.
  • Contribute and support the SVP & Chief Scientist on executing the "Power of Three" strategic efforts, pursuing joint outcomes that fulfill the long-term vision and relevance of the UL enterprise.

Qualifications

  • 15 years of experience in project management, P&L leadership, business operations, or similar.
  • Prefer strong technical background in engineering, sciences, physics, or similar.
  • Innovative and strategic decision-maker - making informed and strategic decisions that balance short-term needs with long-term objectives. Analyzing data, assessing risks and considering various perspectives.
  • Leading by example and able to partner and lead partnership across global, matrixed, and cross-functional divisions/teams.
  • Able to evaluate risk effectively and move forward quickly.
  • Strong communication skills essential for conveying ideas clearly, listening actively and facilitating open dialogue, ensuring all stakeholders are aligned and engaged.

  • Strategic Planning and Execution: the ability to develop and implement strategic plans that align with the incubator's goals and objectives, including market analysis, identifying growth opportunities and setting long-term objectives.

  • Innovation & Product Development: experience in guiding startups through the innovation process, from ideation to product development and market launch, including knowledge of prototyping, testing and scaling products.
  • Networking & Partnership Building: ability to maintain relationships with key stakeholders, working cross-functional to drive and execute strategic initiatives.
  • Data Analytics & Metrics: Proficiency in using data to measure success, including tracking KPIs and using insights to improve programs and services.

Total Rewards: We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career . The estimated salary range for this position is $189,000 to $252,000 and is based on multiple factors, including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, as well as other factors. This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 30 % of the base salary and long term incentive plan of 30% of base salary. This position also provides health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental and financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country. We also provide full-time employees with paid time off including vacation (20 days), holiday including floating holidays (12 days) and sick time off (72 hours).
