Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs scientific work in the study and evaluation of hydrologic and geologic matters. The incumbent performs scientific observation and investigation of the conditions of water resources. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of hydrology, geology and associated scientific and engineering fields is required. The incumbent should have good knowledge of the methods, materials and techniques used in hydrologic and geologic field surveys, studies, and evaluations. The nature of the work is such that the incumbent is expected to exercise independent judgment and initiative in the performance of duties.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES::
  • Conducts field surveys, observes and interprets hydrologic and geologic conditions;
  • Assists in analyzing and investigating the relationship between groundwater and surface water;
  • Studies and evaluates the quality and quantity of the groundwater system;
  • Analyzes associated engineering problems and determines needed data;
  • Provides advice on special studies to members of the department.

Salary Range: $63,919-$103,852 (commensurate with experience)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's Degree in a physical science or engineering, including at least four (4) one-semester courses in hydrology, geology, hydraulics, earth sciences or water resource management, and three (3) years of analytical, technical, investigative or research experience in hydrology, water resource management or a closely related area.

NOTE: Additional education from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State in a physical science or engineering will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

**Master's Degree in a geoscience field is preferred.

This Role Is A Provisional Appointment

A provisional appointment, which occurs only in the competitive class, is a temporary appointment to a position for which no eligible list exists or for which an eligible list exists with fewer than three candidates who are willing to accept the position. In order to become permanent, the employee who is provisionally appointed must take the next examination for the position in question. The appointment to the position is then made from among the three highest scoring passing candidates who indicate their willingness to accept the position. Civil Service law does not compel the appointing authority to choose the provisional employee should he or she be one of the three candidates
