Day in the Life - Electrical Power Systems Engineer
The Electrical Power Systems Engineer designs reliable and efficient power solutions for compressor and meter stations, focusing on natural gas transmission facilities. This role involves architecting comprehensive power systems, conducting power studies, and overseeing the deployment of switchgear, MCCs, and cabling. The engineer ensures compliance with electrical codes, mentors teams, and drives innovative designs to elevate operational excellence. This position supports transmission and processing operations, tackling high-stakes challenges and leading junior engineers with clear direction.

Responsibilities/Expectations:
- Design and optimize power solutions for compressor and meter stations, integrating low-voltage and medium-voltage infrastructure, utility power, backup generators, and load banks
- Conduct power studies (load flow, short-circuit, protective device coordination) to ensure system performance and safety
- Design and deploy motor control centers (MCCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), motors, switchgear, switchboards, conduits, and cabling
- Ensure compliance with electrical codes and industry standards, mentoring teams and pioneering innovative designs
- Provide direct support to transmission and processing operations, solving issues with controls, automation, and power
- Lead junior engineers and drafting group, assigning tasks and reviewing designs for precision and compliance
- Develop and maintain electrical drawings, schedule equipment outages and maintenance, and support project design reviews and factory acceptance testing
- Coordinate and review arc flash studies, implement improvements, and champion best practices
- Accounts for a diverse range of sophisticated assignments requiring the use of experience, innovation and judgment
- Demonstrates technical expertise in a specialty, geographic area, or operational function and applies specialized knowledge in the effective completion of large-scope projects
- Prepares and delivers presentations
- Anticipates internal/external customer needs; assesses requirements and identifies solutions
- Interprets internal/external business challenges and improves products, processes or services
- Collaborates with teams to ensure compliance, build improvement plans and meet training needs
- Champions processes, procedures and safety standards
- Monitors and controls costs and resources associated with projects
- Other duties as assigned
Education/Years of Experience:
- Required: Bachelor's Degree in relevant Engineering field from an accredited college or university, OR Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology in a relevant field with Professional Engineer (P.E.) license; A minimum eight (8) years of multifaceted engineering experience in the natural gas or petrochemical industry
- Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and minimum seven (7) years of progressive engineering experience in the natural gas or petrochemical industry and PE Certification
Other Requirements:
- Experience in medium and low voltage power system design, with a proven record in industrial or energy-sector projects
- Expertise in switchgear, MCCs, generator systems, and power studies (load flow, short-circuit, coordination)
- Proficiency in designing low-voltage and medium-voltage power systems, including field commissioning and troubleshooting
- Knowledge of backup power, motor design, MCCs, VFDs, conduit, cabling, panel design, and utility grid connections
- Understanding of P&IDs, Area Classification for hazardous environments, NFPA 70 (NEC), and IEEE standards
- Project leadership skills, ability to lead junior engineers and drafting teams, and foster a collaborative team environment
- Strong analytical and communication skills, commitment to industry advancements, and great coaching and leadership
- Willing to travel 25% to 50%
- Demonstrates excellent organizational/interpersonal skills and safety as a main priority
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Application and PC skills
- Proficiency in engineering specialties covering more than one subject area
- Preferred: Project Management experience
