Compliance:
  • Deep understanding and proactive monitoring of payroll and time off laws and regulations, including multi-state taxation and state leave laws. Ensure strict adherence and timely updates to maintain compliance.

Software Proficiency:
  • Demonstrated expertise in payroll software such as Workday, Excel, and other relevant tools. Ability to leverage these platforms to streamline payroll processes and enhance data accuracy.

Data Analysis:
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate time off and payroll data, identify trends, discrepancies, and areas for improvement. Utilize data-driven insights to recommend and implement effective solutions.

Proactive Approach:
  • Exhibit a proactive mindset by identifying areas for improvement and implementing solutions independently. Drive continuous improvement initiatives without waiting for direction.

Adaptability:
  • Stay abreast of changes in time off and payroll regulations, as well as software updates. Quickly adapt to new requirements, technologies, and processes to ensure smooth transitions and minimal disruptions.

Risk Management:
  • Identify and mitigate risks related to payroll and absence management. Develop and implement strategies to minimize potential issues and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.

*This is a hybrid position located in Columbus, Ohio. You will be required to come into the office two days per week.

As Director, Payroll Operations, you will design, develop, plan and execute payroll standard methodologies, absence management and time tracking practices. You'll ensure risk governance and compliance with all payroll-related operations and administrative functions and identify and implement automation, data and reporting and process improvements to drive operating efficiency.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Leads team in adhering to established policies, procedures and service level agreements.
  • Creates, implements and delivers payroll, absence, and time-tracking processes, procedures, and methodologies to ensure high accuracy, effectiveness, and compliance.
  • Develops communication materials to notify and/or educate associates to share information on time tracking, payroll or absence management changes.
  • Establishes liaison relationships with industry professionals.
  • Develops policies, processes, programs and services to optimize payroll operations and delivery to associates, leaders, and board members.
  • Partners closely with key internal partners such as Human Resources Business Partners (HRBPs), Benefits Planning, HR Shared Services, Compensation Administration, Legal, and Finance to ensure objectives are met and a high-quality associate experience is provided.
  • Partners with key stakeholders across the enterprise around key payroll transactions, tax filings, monitoring, compliance, communications, and service delivery.
  • Maintains or enhances controls to ensure compliance with all pertinent regulatory bodies, internal audits, and enterprise risk management programs.
  • Leads complex projects that involve multiple functions, business partners, systems, and end users.
  • Develops and delivers programs and activities to encourage the highest level of customer service. Solves highly complex situations and recommends resolutions.
  • Performs all duties with a high level of discretion. Handles confidential information in a professional manner.
  • Leads team members through associate life cycle, including performance management, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow and organization planning, day-to-day management, hiring and placement and disciplinary actions for direct and possibly indirect reports.


May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Associate Vice President, HR Shared Services. Directs a team of 7-10 associates.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate degree in business, human resources or related field of study strongly preferred. Graduate degree preferred.

Experience: Typically, ten or more years of proven experience in payroll administration, management, HR or Finance. Experience with Workday a plus.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Proven knowledge of legal and financial aspects of payroll and customer service. Ability to engage executive level management. Strong leadership, relationship management, and verbal and written communication skills. Ability to analyze information, conduct presentations, and build reports. Good organizational and listening skills, ability to deal with ambiguity and be innovative. Ability to coach and develop associates. Demonstrated program management; project management; process management; vendor management; problem solving; decision making; planning; and implementation skills. Ability to prioritize work effectively. Strong technical acumen.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager's leader and Human Resource Business Partner.
