REPORTING STRUCTURE:
Under the direction of the Director of Special Education and Support Services, the Educationally Related Mental Health Services (ERMHS) Counselor is responsible for supporting the social emotional needs of students with IEPs within the scope of the TK 12 educational setting. The ERMHS Counselor will provide services in a manner that is sound and consistent with the laws and ethics of the profession while adhering to the specific policies and protocols of REAL Journey Academies.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:
Provide educationally related mental health services to students with IEPs.
Support students in developing coping strategies for academic and social emotional success.
Collaborate with school teams to assess and implement support plans for student well being.
Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and ethical guidelines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collaboration & Assessment:
Collaborate with the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) team to support assessment and referral for ERMHS services.
Participate in the assessment process of student mental health and behavior needs.
Provide input on findings and recommendations to the IEP team in IEP meetings.
IEP & Goal Development:
Participate in IEP meetings for students requiring or suspected of needing ERMHS.
Develop counseling goals based on assessment data and collaborate with the IEP team.
Recommend the frequency and duration of direct services and consultations for students and parents.

Service Delivery & Student Support:
Provide direct counseling services (in-person and virtual) as outlined in student IEPs.
Monitor student progress towards counseling goals and report to the IEP team annually.
Maintain service logs and track services provided/missed in the RJA tracking system.
Provide exit reports for students who no longer require ERMHS services.
Facilitate social skills groups for students, including those on the autism spectrum.
Assist students in developing coping strategies for stress, anxiety, depression, and anger management.
Support students in conflict resolution and interpersonal skill development.

Family & Community Support:
Provide outreach and resources to families dealing with social and emotional challenges (e.g., divorce, depression, substance abuse, eating disorders).
Collaborate with administrators, staff, and parents/guardians to support students with attendance, behavior, academic, and social adjustment challenges.

Compliance & Professional Development:
Attend relevant professional development workshops and in service programs.
Participate in student conferences, IEP/504 meetings, and manifestation determination meetings.
Provide crisis intervention counseling as needed.
Consult with teachers, administrators, and parents regarding student social emotional needs.
Conduct student observations in the educational environment for behavioral assessments.
Maintain student files in compliance with CA state guidelines.
Complete Medi Cal and LEA billing in a timely manner.
Maintain confidentiality and comply with all HIPAA requirements.
Follow all rules and regulations of DHCS and other applicable government agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Educational Requirements:
Master's Degree in a mental health field (Social Work, Psychology, Counseling) from an accredited four-year institution.
Licensing & Certification (Candidates must have at least one of the following):
Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential in School Counseling (highly preferred for school-based counseling roles)
OR one of the following mental health licenses:
Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC)
Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC)
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)

Experience & Additional Requirements:
At least two years of successful counseling experience in a school setting or related experience with youth (preferred).
Ability to pass background checks, fingerprint clearance, health screenings, and immunization verification (TB test within the past year).
Valid CPR/First Aid/AED infant/child/adult certification.
Youth Mental Health First Aid certification (preferred).
Valid driver's license, proof of auto insurance, and reliable transportation.
